Google Navigation for Android Gets Real-Time Traffic Avoidance
Google has announced today that Android owners that use their devices as GPS units will have another reason to smile. The free Google navigation service will now be able to route you around traffic jams in real time. No need to adjust any settings, the Google cloud servers will just spit out the fastest route automagically.
In the past, Google Navigation on Android took expected traffic conditions into account, but now they are actually using the real time traffic data to find the best route. The feature is being added in areas of Europe and North America where the turn-by-turn service is already available.
Google also went out of its way to remind us that they cannot guarantee the accuracy of their maps. Still, we've not had any real problems with Google's navigation services. Chime in and let us know what you think of this change.

Sometimes I wonder about googles routing algorithms. For whatever reason it seems to take some screwy routes sometimes, especially when traveling cross country. On our last trip from ohio to connecticut the route there was somewhat standard, although not the usual route we take. But the route back took us down near new york city, had us jumping from one highway to another and crossing the george washington bridge. When it first came back with that route I thought I entered something wrong so I double checked. Then I thought "what the hell, lets take it just for something different." It added nearly 2 hours to the regular trip.
I don't know if the google engineers are getting crafty with their routing algorithms, but they need to tone it down some or at least make that the second option. Its easy enough to ask for an alternative route, but a lot of times the alternative routes aren't a whole lot different.
