That would be a great idea if google had no market share interest at all. Plus, the search algorithms are kept secret to everyone except insiders.

It depends on what your definition of is "is"

I would love to see all the source code for Google and be able to set up my own search engine using said code. That way I could give Google a run for their money and reduce the amount of pointless ads on web pages. They are all open source except when it comes to their own gravy train. So do you you think they will put their money where their mouth is?

You know what though...besides their add and search stuff...they do opensource or provide free to use apis for pretty much anyone.  Yeah...you can blame them for not being 100% open, which is true, but you also have to admit that they are really open, and extremely appealing to developers because of their practices compared to the competition.

Everyone would love to see their search code...microsoft included I'm sure (argue that bing is better if you believe it is...but either way I'm sure microsoft would be interested in seeing google's code...)

Just off the top of my head of stuff they have opensourced or made free api's available for and other big companies use now to bolster their businesses:
Closure Javascript Library/api, wave protocol, chrome browser(gee, MS certainly COULD use that if they wanted...they probably should...), orcut social api, etc...there are many many more I'm not even aware of I'm certain.

The competition though?  Choose whatever competition you like...MS or Yahoo...etc... (who now uses MS's bing for search...) and list things that people are using literally everywhere on every corner of the earth...for free...legally.  I can think of yahoo's javascript library...it's pretty good.  If you include Mono, you can count old versions of microsoft's .net...kinda...but I honestly have a hard time thinking of much more than that...possibly I'm biased, actually, I know I am, but how much better can you do? (I'm really curious...I'm not trying to be an ass).

That open source is not in their direct line of business.  Or maybe it is.  The point of Google is to know all that there is, so if they can get everyone to use their products then they can gather all the data they like.  If other company’s products were to be used then it would be a limit to how to gather said data.  So the best way to ensure your product is used is to give it away for free.  That way even if it is a marginal product people will be less likely to pay for something else.It is like cloud computing.  What does Google get from hosting/storing your companies word documents?  Besides the chance to look like a nice guy?  The Ideal world for Google would be everyone using Chrome based net books link directly into the Google servers using only Google Apps.  And why would anyone have a problem with this?  After all if I was a business and could cut all my IT staff costs to zero (or near zero) I would especially if my competitors were doing the same and using the saving to undercut my sales price. And if you do not believe this will happen, the place I work is looking into doing this to reduce costs.  Even though the individual members of the IT department think it is a bad idea, the group as a whole thinks it is a great idea.

So back to my original comment it would be nice if Google was to make public its source code and the secret of how it makes money so that it was truly open source.
