Google Expands Auto-Complete Blacklist
It’s been a while, so you could be forgiven for letting it slip your mind, but Google is in the habit of censoring its auto-complete suggestions. Starting almost a year ago El Goog began removing suggestions for content relating to search terms like torrent, bittorrent, and RapidShare. According to TorrentFreak, a recent update to Google’s search tools has expanded the auto-complete blackout to include the names of file sharing websites.
Users that enter searches including terms like pirate bay, isohunt, and btmon are finding their searches pull up no suggestions. It’s just a few extra keystrokes, so what’s the harm? Statistics have shown that limiting auto-complete results negatively affects the traffic for sites. The sites are still in search results, but people find them less. These moves are likely undertaken to win support from the entertainment industry.
While this is certainly more acceptable than extreme anti-piracy measures like SOPA/Protect IP, something doesn’t sit right. A Pirate Bay spokesperson claims this is one more step along the road to censoring search results. Do you think so?

Was this on their to do list because I'm not seeing it in action. When I type "pir" into Google its auto complete recommends Pirate Bay. When I type in "ISO_" in it recommends ISOHunt.com.

Autocomplete/google instant is a huge annoying POS. It would be nice to disable it permanently.

+1. Most times autocomplete only guesses right after I've already typed in what I'm looking for.

Google's always going to be in a tough position for anything that they do, as they control the majority of traffic (and therefore money) going through the internet. A small move like this costs some companies millions and saves others millions. They have shown themselves to be responsible in not censoring results before, and sometimes I even see a little thing that says some results had to be removed

I couldn't care less what Google does with their auto-complete. I never use it. Besides, it is one thing for Google to censor actual search results, and another thing entirely for them to censor what terms they are providing YOU to search on from auto-complete. It is likely nothing more than a CYA move.
Is there something the matter with your fingers that you cannot simply type in the full word you are searching for? Have we become so helpless that we need Google to provide our search terms for us while we are hunting for shit to steal?

How long before Google starts reporting people to police for their searches?
How long before Google starts collecting fees to move vendors to the top of search lists? Hell, they probably already do.

If you're so concerned, don't use Google. They aren't the bloody government or anything.

That might seem like good advice at first, but then you have to remember that a lot of people don't know what big corporations are doing behind their back. If everybody who discovered the dirty truth decided to just stay out of it and stop associating with the involved corporation(s), the majority of people still wouldn't know.
How do you expect people to make informed decisions about whose services to use, if nobody decides to speak up about what's good and bad?
If you find out your neighbor's a serial killer, do you report him or leave him be?

No, troll breath, money is why corporations get away with shit. whether its "I will fund your campaign to pass this law" or "I will pay you to quietly supress this service." Do you REALLY think that the thousands of websites and tens of thousands o people trapped in cellphone contracts or underwater morgatges don't make an issue of them at least three times a week to anyone who will listen?
If you do, I have some nice pills you might be interested in taking.

dunno how that's working for them, I type in "pi" and it auto-completes "piratebay" in the search box and the first site brought up is "thepiratebay.org"

Agreed. Right now it's a simple matter to hit "enter" and still get the results you were searching, but sooner or later Big G or Bing or someone else is just going to decide "no, those results are too sensetive for you to see, here, have a paid link to BMG/Universal instead."
and yes, I'm sure that there is a noticable traffic drop, especially from casual users who have no idea that there may be other results out there that they are having hidden from them.
