Google Earth Notches 1 Billion Downloads
Most of the world's nearly 7 billion inhabitants don't have the means to physically explore every corner of the Earth, or even a quarter of it. That doesn't mean we're not intensely curious about this rock we live on, which might help explain how Google Earth has been downloaded over a billion times since it launched six years ago.
Google made the announcement on its blog earlier today and noted that its figure is a cumulative tally of all Google Earth platforms, including the desktop client, mobile apps, and the Google Earth plug-in.
"We’re proud of our one billion milestone, but we’re even more amazed at the way people have used Google Earth to explore the world," stated Brian McClendon, VP of Engineering, Google Earth and Maps.
The one billion figure makes Google Earth one of the most popular applications ever. To celebrate the milestone, Google put together a short YouTube video and kicked off a website -- www.oneworldmanystories.com -- filled with feel-good stories on how people have used to the app up to this point.
