Google Chrome OS Launch in 1 Month?
It's been all quiet on the Chrome OS front lately, but some recent comments on the Google Code site have some wondering if a release is right around the corner. Google announced Chrome OS last year around this time, and said the product would be available be the end of 2010. So here we are, and it looks like Chrome OS has hit Release Candidate stage. This is usually the final stage of development before software goes gold.
Chrome OS will be based around the Google Chrome browser. All actions in the cloud-based OS will be handled within the browser interface. Many feel that this is a limiting experience, but Google has been working over the last years to create web services that would dovetail nicely with Chrome OS.
Google did issue a statement on the rumor, but it was predictably bland, just reiterating their prviously stated time line. "We are very happy with the progress of Google Chrome OS and expect devices will be available later this year. We’ll have more details to share at launch," said Google of the rumors. Where do you think Chrome OS will fit in with the ever growing mobile space?

If it's touch friendly it may become a great OS for really cheap tablet PC's. I could see this running on a really low powered tablet with 3G/4G and WiFi connectivity built in.
The problem I have with this OS though when it comes to desktops and laptops is the fact that it doesn't really care very much about what hardware you have. As long as your computer can display content it isn't going to have to do very much in the way of actually processing data as the cloud will be responsible for hosting everything but the browser and basic usability offline. Also this OS is going to only run software Google allows you to run. I wonder if there is going to be a Chrome OS market.

"All actions in the could based OS will be handled within the browser interface."

You haven't heard about the COULD? The cloud is so yesterday.

What i'm interested in knowing is if there's going to be any support for older hardware by Chrome OS, such as desktops and laptops 5-6 years old, or even older. I own a Dell Precision M50, and XP SP3 just barely chugs along. Linux operating systems do not offer driver support for it, so i'm kinda stuck with XP for now, I'm just wondering if Chrome OS, being as light as they say it's going to be, would actually function properly in this old laptop, and be light enough to give it some new life. Of course, some would simply suggest to park it because it's too old, but in this economy, "if it ain't broke"...

On the "ultraportable" market, it's more like if Google Chrome can put a dent in iOS and Linux, unless you really want to consider Windows XP.
I don't think it'll catch on. But then again, I can't read the future.
