Sound more like a move that doesn't support crApple or Microsoft h264 patents with the pending unleashing of Chrome OS. While embracing open technologies is indeed the Google way, I can see many legal reasons to shun this potential lawsuit in advance. I just hope that an open source group steps up to the plate and makes a real delivery, otherwise Google will be shooting themselves in the foot in the long-term... especially as GPU enabled browsing become more popular.

I do like Google, but sorry, shunning closed-source technologies isn't being open.  Being open is letting people use whichever codec they want to use.

This will just bring back the "This page can only be viewed with Internet Explorer" problems of the old days.
