Google and Mozilla Ink New Search Agreement
Mozilla on Tuesday announced that Google had agreed to a new search referral deal with it, ending weeks of suspense over the search giant’s willingness to renew the deal ever since it expired last month and allowing the latter to remain the default search provider inside Firefox. This also brings to an end the recent speculation regarding the fate of Firefox, which was seen as being closely linked to the proceeds from the deal.
With Mozilla revealing nothing substantial beyond the fact that it’s a “multi-year” deal, the exact terms of the agreement are likely to remain a mystery until Mozilla releases its 2012 revenue details in late 2013. Just to give you an idea, Mozilla earned 84% of its $123 million revenue in 2010 through its search partnership with Google.
“Under this multi-year agreement, Google Search will continue to be the default search provider for hundreds of millions of Firefox users around the world,” said Gary Kovacs, CEO, Mozilla.
“Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come,” said Alan Eustace, Senior Vice President of Search, Google.

"$123 million in 2010 alone."I have no idea how much it costs to run firefox, or how many staff they have on the paybooks, but surely they must have a little kitty stashed away earning lots of interest. I had no idea they made that much money. Wow.

This agreement means that google can be firefox's homepage yet again? How on earth can that determine the fate of firefox?

No money, no google homepage -> no google homepage, no money.
Google gives Mozilla 84% of their revenue ($123m), so that's around $100m. If they've been running their company on $123m, it's a big step down to run their company on $23m.

Google gives FireFox money for sending people to Google for their searching needs.
Without money from Google, FF would fail.
