Ghoulish Redbox Price Bump Coming This Halloween
It was a war on two fronts that eventually drove Blockbuster into bankruptcy. Netflix was on one side, and Redbox on the other. Redbox has long been a favorite of thrifty film-buffs with its super-cheap $1 per-night movie rentals. Unfortunately, the party is over, or is at least getting a little less raucous. Redbox is upping that DVD charge to $1.20 a night starting October 31st.
On the positive side, pricing for Blu-Rays and video games are staying put at $1.50 and $2 respectively for the time being. Parent company Coinstar discussed the change in its earnings report, stressing that this is the first rate increase on Redbox machines in eight years. A likely cause of the price hike is the increasing stresses caused by disc exclusivity windows imposed by the studios.
As a bit of an olive branch, Redbox will allow customers to reserve discs online and rent then for $1 for just the first night through the end of November. Does this small price hike make you less likely to use a Redbox?

This is what their e-mail said:
"Starting on Monday, October 31, the daily rental charge for DVDs will change to $1.20 a day.* The price change is due to rising operating expenses, including new increases in debit card fees. Daily rental charges for Blu-ray™ Discs and video games won't change.** Additional-day charges for DVDs rented before 10/31 won't be affected, either. "
Increased debit card fees! You can thank the "Frank-Dodd Credit Card Law" that was meant to save consumers money. The bill was full of loopholes! Our lawmakers are clueless.
Even though it's only 20 cents it is a 20% increase. But I only rent 2 to 3 DVDs a month so it's not bad. I'll still use it but lets hope they don't get greedy and make this a habit.

I'll still use redbox; I never really keep a movie for more than one night, so it's still a better deal than renting from blockbuster or any local video joint.
However, I'm skeptical on the reasoning behind it.

I understand that they would eventually have to raise rental prices, even just to account for inflation. I think they should tread lightly, though. If they do it again too soon, it might start to hurt business.
Speaking of which, these "disc exclusivity windows" are major BS. They're BS on the part of the studios, first of all, but they also wouldn't hold up in court. Movie studios tried to stop video rentals back when VHS came out. Because of the First Sale Doctrine, they lost that battle. This time they're threatening to cut off the distributors, and apparently everyone dealing with Hollywood lost their balls over the last 30 years.
Who really cares, though, right? There aren't that many "must see" movies put out by the major studios, anyway. I'll wait, or just do something else like play a video game or read a book.

I love Red Box. It would be great if they could start streaming. Heck, I am willing to pay double for that service!

And I'm sure they're willing to charge you double for streaming. :)

So, you are willing to pay $2.40 a night for streaming? A 30 day/night month and that equates to $72 a month. Yeah, you go right on ahead.

Umm, I do not rent movies ever single night. If I did, I would be some boring person. I typically rent movies on the weekends. Either Saturday OR Sunday, but not both. So $9.60 which is not too bad compared to PayPerView.

"ZOMGBBQ Redbox is RAISING PRICES!?!? Nooooooeeees!!!!! BURN THEM DOWN!!! BOYCOTT Redbox!!!!! HOW DARE THEY GOUGE US LIKE THIS!! I'll *NEVER* pay for Redbox again!"
I saved everyone the trouble.
Just like people freaked out when Netflix "rasied" prices, people are gonna freak out about 20 cents.

Please explain why "raised" is in quotes. Netflix did not raise their price?

The studios have nothing to do with Redbox but whatever floats your boat.

Did you read the article?
"A likely cause of the price hike is the increasing stresses caused by disc exclusivity windows imposed by the studios."
Even if that wasn't the case, a company that is in the business of renting another company's products has something to do with that other company.

Im torn. I used redbox until i found the power of ebay and great deals on blockbuster express codes. bought 50 of them for only $4.00!!! Granted, a few have not worked, but I have gotten more than my moneys worth. Have not found the same deal with redbox yet. Price increases might change my overal view of them but its still not as bad as blockbuster. They have a new "Hotlist" idea but I can usually get the same movie for a lower price at redbox. Even with the price increase its still cheaper...and the codes do not work on hotlist titles so I will stick with redbox for those for the time being
