Gateway Gives ID and NV Series Notebooks a Makeover
Big, bulky notebooks are going the way of the dodo, save for full fledged desktop replacements that sacrifice portability for raw power. The trend now is towards sleek and sexy machines, a point underscored by Gateway's retooled ID and NV series, both of which sport "incredibly stylish designs in the most in-demand sizes, powered by the latest in mobile technology."
Gateway managed to squish its 14-inch HD widescreen back-lit LED display with full edge-to-edge glass into a chassis typically used for smaller 13.3-inch models in its revamped ID47 series. It measures just 12.97 (W) x 8.95 (D) x 0.85-1.13 (H) inches and weighs 4.6 pounds, which isn't quite MacBook Air or Samsung Series 9 territory, but it does come with a DVD burner. Other features include an Intel Core i5 2410M processor (2.3GHz), 4GB of DDR3 memory, Intel HD Graphics 3000, 500GB SATA hard drive (5400RPM), 1.3MP HD webcam, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 (x1) and USB 2.0 (x2) ports, HDMI, multi-gesture touchpad, dedicated audio control and social network keys, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and a 6-cell battery.
For those who need something bigger, the NV series boasts a 15.6-inch display, also in a stylish chassis that features a matte lid with either a subtle geometric pattern or the digital wave pattern. This one comes equipped with many of the same features as the ID47 except with an AMD quad-core A8-3500M APU (1.5GHz and Radeon HD 6620G graphics), 6GB of DDR3 memory, and 640GB SATA hard drive (5400RPM).
The ID47 ($700) and NV55 ($530) are available now.
