Games For Windows Dead, Consumed By Xbox.com
Oh, Microsoft, why have you abandoned PC gamers? Don't get us wrong, Age of Empires Online looks awesome, but the company's almost complete lack of PC gaming news at this year's E3 left a bitter taste in our mouths, and Microsoft's been conspicuously silent on the PC front ever since – until now. Lower your heads and mourn, PC gamers. The continuously half-baked Games for Windows disappears on July 11th, swallowed by the all-consuming console-centric blob that is the Xbox brand.
While many gamers might just shrug and go back to the free Team Fortress 2 action on Steam, ditching Games for Windows is sure to irritate PC fanatics who hate the encroaching tentacles of Xbox Live. On its end, Microsoft's Games for Windows website says "Games for Windows Marketplace will fully transition over to Xbox.com. Now you can get all of your gaming needs in one place. It’s convenient, it’s concentrated, and it’s a whole lot of great games." We're all for convenience, but we can't help but wonder when Microsoft will stop trying to shoehorn PC gamers and console gamers into the same "One size fits all" box.
The July 11th transition date comes courtesy of a Microsoft clarification to Eurogamer. "All account information will remain the same and community members can still take advantage of their Xbox Live profile in their Windows games and stay connected to friends who are playing on the PC," Microsoft told the website.

Good ridance....I hate it when a game is integrated with that crappy service. Too many bugs in the interface; it sucks.
But how is this going to affect those of us running games like Fallout 3 GOTY that uses GFW (LIVE)? I know I don't have to connect to GFW to play the game, but I have one other game that uses it for playing coop mode...I take it they are leaving the service up and running for those games that are intergrated with it?

I'm not going to mourn the retiring of Games For Windows since Microsoft never really supported it in the first place. In fact, I mourn the loss of my Games For Windows Magazine (Previously known as Computer Gaming World) much much more.

"Games for Windows Dead"
Huh? Games for Windows are generally quite awesome IMHO, TYVM.
I play action, adventure, RTS, RPG, and racing. Not much for FPS personally, but every once in a while I'll play one.
Even the online games at miniclip are cool-worthy.
I read the article, just sayin'.
And Steam... Steam is a work of Art.

Truly a dark time... But since Games For Windows will now turn into Xbox... Is there any chance that the avatars will be fully interactive like those on the console version? If so, I will be very happy!!!

Games for Windows Live was dead on arrival. Microsoft never supported it and never game a damn about PC Gaming since they launched the Xbox. All they care about now is their console, which is really just a PC in a box without upgrade options... oh, and constant hardware failures.

I really don't see what all the bellyaching is about. Based on the info above, it sounds like GFWL is just being rebranded as a PC subcategory of XBL. Considering that both services use the same account info, merging the websites and changing the logos on the PC clients shouldn't affect any content that's tied to your account.
Ideally, this could reduce segmentation among the community, and foster inclusiveness. Some people play on just PCs or consoles, but we're all gamers. Maybe this change in philosophy will even cause Microsoft to reexamine cross-platform multiplayer. But then, that assumes there's forward-thinkers in Redmond.

Chill out and grow up. What do you even care what other people do? By all means, be happy with your consumer choices, but it doesn't mean you're better than anyone. I prefer PC versions of games when I have the choice, too, but you don't see me going around shitting on people. I have better things to spend my energy on.

Oh, I really like your name. I am a vegetarian, trying to become a vegan. Much respect to you. Above all, we are all gamers.
Sad facts about most people is that the world is either black or white. You are either a PC Gamer or a Console Gamer. I enjoy the best of both worlds, and can never lock myself up to just one or the other. I am too much of a PC Gamer to be a console gamer, and vice versa. When people open their minds, they will see that they should have lived a life in gray... And perhaps open up their minds to our cool, healthier lifestyles. With that said, I learn to just laugh at the blissful ignorance.
Peace...

Yet another boneheaded move by MicroSloth, abandoning a segment that is in no way dead or dieing, in an attempt to set the pace for others to follow.
Someone has been drinking their own Koolaid again!

Me thinks this move by Microsoft makes better financial sense in that both platforms will be centralized, more efficient, and easier managed.
I could be mistaken, but doesn't it make any cents?

I run windows at home because I don't want to bother with more than one OS and I'm a PC gamer. How long before I go back to my youthful Linux ways? This is one step in that direction.

IF we're lucky, we'll get to play with console gamers next, and show them how to pwn at $game.

The PC versions of Shadowrun and Lost Planet: Colonies Edition offer cross-platform multiplayer. Shadowrun even has achievements that require fellow players from the other platform in a match.

Microsoft... while you are at it... there is no reason my Windows PC should not be able to run an XBOX Virtual Machine which limits that VM to the same specs as a real XBOX 360 while allowing me the versatility to use XLB on more than just my 360 hardware.
Just think about the added GOLD membership dues you could collect?

"Oh Microsoft, why have you abandoned PC gamers?"
Because they are busy writing software for robotics in the commercial industry. An auto manufacturer will pay more money for Microsoft's software than PC gamers will. Microsoft doesn't care about the people who got their business where it arrived at 6 years ago, now they only look at the numbers on a general ledger accounting sheet.

Man, I think it was Age of Empires something that was a whole 99c when the service launched. It was, like, for one day only.
I never played the game, but I sure bought the release up, hoping they'd follow it with more similarily priced extravaganza's.
