This is a step in the right direction to a decent competitor for steam. Better than Origin, better than GOGs, but nowhere near Steam's level.

igoka

I agree about Origin , it sucks but GOG really ? This is the only one system that gives you games with no any kind of DRM inside , you buy it and play it anywhere .

This is good. More options for Consumers.

Yeah I think I will stick to OWNING games... buying them from Steam sales.

Actually, you don't own games purchased from Steam either. There's been games that have actually been removed from Steam; some EA games comes to mind when they started Origin to make them "exclusive" to Origin. People that "owned" those EA games can't download and play them anymore on Steam.

At Gamefly you can also buy digital games outright too, just like on Steam. A Gamefly subscription isn't required to buy PC digital downloads, or to play them (but you do get Unlimited Play when you do subscribe). Every once in a while they have pretty good deals too, like 75% off. I think the best way still though to "own" a game is to buy the physical copy.

@igoka

Wait, what? Actually I’m not affiliated with Gamefly at all; I don’t even have a subscription to their service, even though I’ve dabbled with it a little bit. I wouldn’t actually mind working for them though; it’s better than no job at all. I’m just a struggling college student, hoping I can get a job after I finish my degree.

The services have to pay licensing fees though to put the games on their service, a lot like Netflix instant streaming (you see a lot of movies and shows showing up and being taken off). Sadly this is true for all the services, including EA’s Origin, Steam, Gamefly and even Gog.com (my favorite one of all of them).

Speaking of Gog.com, they seem the least evil of all of them. It’s kind of nice to be able to download your games, make a back a backup and install it on as many computers as you like without any restrictions. In fact, it doesn’t have any DRM at all.

They used to be known as Good Old Games (hence the GOG) but now they’re starting to support newer games, like The Witcher 2. So now they want to be known as just Gog.

In fact, I even bought The Witcher 2 on Steam when it was on sale, got the serial number and got a free “backup” copy at Gog.com with all the bonus features and everything Gog normally offers for all their games. I was now able to make a backup of it by burning it to a Blu-Ray disc (the game is huge at around 17gb’s).

Oh wait, I guess I just sounded like a Gog employee. Gog, are you listening? Got any job openings?

Uh, which games are you referring to, Gamefly Employee of the Month? Because I still have all the EA Games in my library that are 'no longer available' for purchase on Steam. You can't buy them, but you can still play them if you bought them.

Let me know which games you personally can't access... cause I think you are full of shit.

avatar

bobthegoat2001

@Biceps

I thought about that after I posted it. I remember reading about it somewhere, but since I don’t actually own any EA games on Steam, I wasn’t able to see if they really stopped you from downloading it.

So I was wrong about that small detail, the bulk of my post is still true. Why you gotta be so mean about it? I guess people are pretty touchy about which service people support, I guess just like PS3 and Xbox 360 fanboys.

avatar

Biceps

@bobthegoat2001: sorry to be mean, perhaps it was uncalled for. I do like Steam, the service has been great, and while there are always going to be some issues specific to keeping all your games in the cloud, having games I have paid for removed from my library is not one of them I have experienced or have heard of.

When I see people who appear to be making shit up using that shit they made up to attack shit I love... I get angry. Sorry if I flipped on you.

Peace.

"So I was wrong about that small detail, the bulk of my post is still true. Why you gotta be so mean about it?"

What bullshit. Half of your entire first post was about that "small detail". Turns out it's a lie. Next time check something before you say it. You don't just make shit up, it makes you look like a moron.

I don't think you're a shill for Gamefly, but don't try to bullshit us. Accept your mistake.

bobthegoat2001

@Ghok

???

You just quoted me accepting my mistake. What else do you want me to say?

avatar

igoka

I feel a little guilt for sound like an ass and I would like to apologize to you for that . You were so defensive for Gamefly , i mean listen everyone i know who ever used Gamefly think it's bad. As for a college student may i give you advice don't take sides to quickly sometimes you can take wrong side.

avatar

bobthegoat2001

Thanks for the apology! Not too many people do that. Thanks.

Bob the Goat.... Nope Troll him anywayz! J/K yeah net class is kind of rare...

Would never trust Gamefly again. I've subscribed off and on over the years until their support team and lack of quality service pushed me over the edge. I'd never restart my account, let alone give them another opportunity to expand.

Steam works fine and their deals are great!
