I been waiting on buying the next generation because and only because of the hd capabilities. I want to play Mario on my full hd tv!
So this new nintendo is not as capable of playing ultra high graphics like xbox 360 or the ps3. It's a diferent world of games it's nintendo games.

The Corrupted One

I always compare Nintendo to Valve.

Makes creative games, but to the point that it doesn't limit them, doesn't give a shit about the graphics(except for strong art direction).

I still need to finish the Prime series.

Bring me a game with with good facial animation and I will show you Half Life 2.

I still worry greatly about the durability of that WiiU controller. (Specifically the display) Kids are tough with electronics.

But that's the problem here: The Pricepoint. This thing is going to be stupid-expensive because of that controller. If you rolled it out for 199, and games were priced 35 or less, than yeah it would probably sell very well, but when you have the new iPad pumping out better graphics from games priced around 15 dollars today, what's the point of this thing?

Obsolete before it even hit the shelves. Way to go, Nintendo.

The iPad presents a far more significant threat to Nintendo than Microsoft or Sony (though Apple of course presents a threat to everyone). But Apple is selling millions of iPads year over year. Nintendo could very well be planning such a release schedule for the Wii U. Imagine the Wii U, Wii V, Wii W, and so on. Each one would be a new tablet upgrade for your Wii in direct competition with Apple. Backwards compatible games and all that fun stuff. The selling point of course are the games you know: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.

I may be giving Nintendo far too much credit, but they *are* survivors. They can't be so inept to release a tablet system and not prepare for all out war with the iPad, can they?

So basically Wii U third-party games will suck just as bad as they did on the Wii. Figures. Nintendo is betting that you or someone in your household will NEED to play the latest Zelda or Mario console game right when they're released. Which, as we now know, means purchasing an under-powered gaming system. Others should just pass.

Graphics have never been a high point for any Nintendo system. Sony and Sega always had a system with better graphics, but it was the selection of games that made Nintendo fun. When I bought my Wii I knew the graphics weren't as good as PS3 or XBox, but at the time it was the only system with motion control.

I call bullshit sir. Nintendo for the longest time had better graphics than other systems out there. Only their handhelds were underpowered.

SNES>Genesis
N64>Playstation
Gamecube>Playstation 2....obviously Xbox had better graphics than both.

Don't forget the NES was the more powerful of the 8-bit consoles too. The Master System or Atari 7800 just didn't cut it by comparison.

Nintendo's slogan wasn't "Now You're Playing With Power" for nothing. They were referring to the leap in processing power the NES had over competitors. Even their official magazine's name alluded to the system's power. They really wanted the US public to know that it was an improvement over the Atari which had gotten stale.

Yup, Nintendo used to be all about power. The Wii was their first major curve ball move.

You're joking, right? The Sega Master System was superior to the NES in every way as far as technology. Where it failed was it's game library and third party support, which was due to Nintendo of America's forcing of third party publishers to only put out games for their console. That is what held the Master System back. That wasn't an issue in Europe and Australia, and the Master System was more popular than the NES on both those territories.

Perhaps I just never noticed since Nintendo games have always been cartoonish.

avatar

Caboose

Oh ya, all those cartoonish games. None of that on any other console eh?

avatar

Scatter

Not nearly as many. You can probably count the number of realistic non cartoonish games on the Wii on your fingers.

jghellion

That's not the way I remember it.

From what I recall it was the other way around (I wouldn't say by a lot though.) but Nintendo had games that appealed to a broader audience.

The SNES was on par with the Genesis in graphics, but sound wasn't even close. The SNES absolutely crushed the Genesis at sound effects and most especially music. Games like FF6 and Chrono Trigger, ones that lived and breathed on their fantastic musical scores, would have been half the games they were if put on the Genesis.

Hardware capabilities aren't really that important. Some people want to see cutting edge games, but millions also flock to things like Minecraft. It's really all about a compelling experience. Give me brilliant art design, fluid animations and deep gameplay over cutting edge graphics any day.

That being said, the Wii didn't suck only because it wasn't HD. The entire experience sucked from the crippled online capabilities to the horde of awful game offerings to the forced motion gaming.

The fact that the Wii U (horrible name btw) will be a generation behind the PS4 and X720 in hardware capabilities will mean that developers will again not be catering to the system. It's going to receive a ton of bad ports and offer only a handful of unique games that won't justify owning the system -- at least for me. I don't own a Wii and have never once wished I did. I definitely will not be owning a Wii U. I'd actually like to see how long I can hold out on PC titles before purchasing any of the next gen consoles at all -- though the next Xbox will be my preference given how awesome Xbox Live has become.

Nintendo needs to bring back the "Seal of Quality", like we had in the NES days. Would help reduce the amount of crapware and 50 cent games you find.

What happened to this running 6000 series graphics? Last I heard this was supposed to be about as powerful as a 5770/6770... which I can say with 100% certainty is more powerful than the old 500mhz chip kicking in the circa 2005... Unless the specs have changed Methinks this is more of a mark of an incompetent developer than the mark of an under powered system...

You're thinking of the new Xbox. The Wii U was slated to have an HD4650 based GPU.
