First US Internet Rehab Center Now Open for Business

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Here in my home state of Washington we’ve got a new business open, and it’s aimed at taking in lost souls that find themselves addicted to the Internet (if you believe in that sort of thing).

reSTART is a program which has been launched by the Heavensfield Retreat Center in Fall City, WA. It offers a 45-day treatment program, which consists of 12-step meetings, recreation activities, “high adventure” outings, health and fitness programs and volunteer service. This is alongside psychiatric assessments, medical treatment, scholastic tutoring and career guidance.

In order to get into the program you must show symptoms of Internet addiction (I suppose having Facebook or Twitter on your bookmark bar could be a start), and a deep wallet. The course will cost $14,500, but the folks at reSTART argue that the price is fair.

So what do you think of Internet addiction? Is it just an excuse for kids to do poorly in school, or is it a legitimate affliction? Make your voice heard in the comments.

Addictions are addictions imo, why a specialized internet one? why not just an all in one rehab centre?

avatarhmm acording to

hmm acording to http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2008/11/americans-now-w.html The average U.S. household watched TV for 8 hours and 18 minutes a day from September 2007 to September 2008.but thats not adictive?

at the very least comps or consoles offer some interaction an brain function.any thing done to excess is bad for you.loved their pics with the kid messing with the lap top an they "come on now" an then their "hope" with out side picture from a house thats probly very nice.an all that polin makes me want to puke .alergies, copd,an bad sinuses.

bet they will eventualy try to say video games cause violent problems among us./yawn how drool.

again any thing to excess is bad for you.if they can get that covered threw insurace they will profit for a bit. if not they wount be around for long .im hopeing for the latter.

avatarGoing to sign up.

I'm going to sign up, as soon as I am done with this raid.... well, maybe this weekend, the guild has alot of stuff going on this week... lol jk :P

Seriously though, for those who find themselves playing MMOs just a little too much, I recommend watching the documentary "Second Skin" It was on hulu for about a week but they took it down. I believe it is being released on DVD tomorrow. It doesn't exactly paint mmos in a healthy light, but it does give you some perspective.

avatarThis is a scam.

So what do they do?  Teach a person how to become Amish?  Because thats just about what it would take to stay disconnected these days.

Hell, give me the money.  I'll start my own rehab program!

Step #1:

Punch yourself in the face

avatar cinsidering what is

cinsidering what is offerered it almost might make a worthwile vacation. And with tech being so prominent in our lives maybe a break and a head shrinker would help bring somone dangerously imursed down to normal levels but again how do you know what is dangerous?

I took their survey and one of their questions was very vague, uptimatly i scored a 3 which they say is "signs of abuse"

avatarHonestly, anyone with 15

Honestly, anyone with 15 grand to blow on therapy, doesn't give a damn if there addicted or not, and even so, they would use the internet to find a way to fix that issue. I would rather watch porn all day than to spend 15g on therapy.

avatar I'm not adicted i can stop

I'm not adicted i can stop any time!

Joking aside how can you really tell a addict, in our increasingly wired world what is the limit? I work (including commute time) a 13 hour day. When i get home i hope on my mmo or favorite steam game. I often work weekeneds and have to be on call. With what little free time i have and having to remain "in touch" i choose to game, or watch movies. But would that make me Wired or Adicted?

avatarOh yeah. WoW addict. But I kicked it.. for now..

Crazy statistics about how much some folks play WoW but I was up there. At 57, mostly retired, I would play 10+ hors a day for almost a year. I ended up in physical therapy for my shoulder of my mouse arm.

The way I did kick it was upped my antidepressant, gave up caffiene, uninstalled WoW and gave my authenticator to my sister. I then started exercising the huge amount of fat off me as I had gained 25 lbs during that year on WoW.

Been 2 1/2 months now. Bliizcon DID NOT HELP at all, believe me. Also lost 30 lbs just by exercising and not eating at my computer any more.

There is a need all right. Would I pay $15 grand? No, but if my wife was alive, she would have.
