First Look: The New White R.A.T. 7

If you will recall, we rather like the R.A.T. line of mice here at Maximum PC. In our recent Dream Machine 2011 build, we used the wireless R.A.T. 9, and the R.A.T. 7 is the only mouse that’s ever received a 10 Kick Ass verdict in the pages of the magazine. From what we’ve heard since then, we didn’t make a mistake with that review—some people snark about the R.A.T.’s over-the-top futuristic design, but nearly everyone who’s actually gamed with one loves it. In fact, when we ran our “Best PC Part I Ever Spent My Hard-Earned Cash On” contest last week, no other piece of hardware got anywhere near as many mentions as the R.A.T., which was featured in 7 entries.
So we were pretty psyched to get our hands on the new version of the R.A.T 7: the Albino. It’s got an enhanced sensor (up to 6,400 DPI, although we’re starting to wonder what sort of person actually needs that much sensitivity), but the real star of the show is the new matte white finish. We’ve taken some pictures so you can see for yourselves, but they don’t really do it justice—every person we’ve showed the mouse to so far has agreed that it’s a very cool look.
Expect a full review of the updated R.A.T. in an upcoming issue of Maximum PC, but for now check out our photos and the official press release below.

this mouse has a grip that is straight down along the sides. so it has a very bad grip for the subtle lifting you do when using a mouse. and the mouse is heavy so it tends to slip out of your grip or make you grip harder to perform the lifts. this mouse looks cool but is way overrated.and You know, that's a very mean thing to say. Matt is a nice kid, and just because he doesn't go out very often doesn't mean he's an Albino. He's just a little pale, is all Squidoo Lenses

I'm taking mine back tomorrow. It was fabulous for about 2 days and then it got possessed by the devil or possibly something worse like Michelle Bachmann. The software has known incompatabilities with Logitech software and my experiences have been in line with those reported previously.
Stay away from this mouse - Black, White or tatooed

I bought one because of the kickass maximum pc review......worked great 2 months, then had serious tracking issues.
I sent it back to madcatz for a replacement......the tracking on the 2nd one was faulty from the start....i also tried it on other pc's as well....as well as reinstalling windows (no fun at all).....still eratic tracking.....so i hooked my older G5 back up ......i figure since the 1 year warranty is up in December 1st.....i should send it back once more.
I am waiting for the second replacement as i write this.....i hope they have fixed this issue.....i wish it was still within the 30 day return period from newegg when it 1st started acting up....i would have gotten a refund.
It is sad...because it is a very well made and creative designed mouse.....maybe they will send me a good working model this time.
Big Flop for "maximum pc" giving this a kickass award.....i am not hating on maximum pc....i have subscribed to them for 4 years now.

I imagined the white RAT 7 was from Portal 2, or advertising the game. :P Just wish the red was painted blue instead. :/

I love my R.A.T. 7 , never had an issue. Only time I have had tracking issues, is when my desk had crums or abunch of dirt on it. Took me 2 seconds to blow the dirt out of the sensor hole, and made me relize I need to clean my desk off. lol

I bought the rat 7 based on reviews, a few weeks later replaced it with a nice g500. The rat looks cool, but you ultimately don't need all the custom settings and it never felt any better than my logitech g5 that it was replacing.
There's no tilt scroll wheel and the thumb wheel is hard to use and doesn't work in half the apps like the logitech does.
The real kicker was all the tracking problems. Suddenly losing a SC2 match because your mouse is stuck on the horizontal or veritical is inexcuseable. My guess is the hole for the laser is simply too small and allows dust to clog it up too quickly (after just a day or two of use). I've never had this issue with the G5 or G500 sooo... bleh to this mouse. Shame on the good reviews too.

had to send it back due to to major tracking problems. I liked the adjustments, but thought it could have been a little bit better built.

Sucks. I bought the RAT 7 2x's. Both had tracking issues. The few minutes they both worked, it was the best mouse I ever had by far.

I bought this mouse as soon as it was available based on MPC's review. While it is a cool mouse, i dont think it deserved a 10, perhaps a 9 with a kickass award.
I currently recommend the logitech g500 to my friends and they love it. Anyone who asks me about the RAT i definitely take the time to let them know my issues with it.
First off the customization is awesome however the left side panel doesnt lock down tight enough and is very easy to push back in during the middle of a game.
I had severe tracking issues (on a Razer vespula) I contact madcatz and they send me a registry key to disable any type of windows mouse acceleration. This did help a bit but on occassion the mouse still loses tracking, either vertically or horizontally. Blowing on the sensor, nintendo style, tends to correct the issue so perhaps its a dust / debris issue.
Loud music - when playing loud music or when there is a lot of bass (e.g. from gunfire) the cursor jumps around due to the vibrations, leaving me using headphones most of the time.
Currently i may get the upcoming steelseries mouse or replace the RAT with a G500....

I bought this mouse a few months ago. The design was really cool. Unfortunately it's nowhere near as good as the Logitech G500; which is the best gaming mouse money can buy in my opinion. I don't care for the sensitivity button placement they can't be customized. There are only 2 thumb buttons. No left and right scroll on the mouse wheel, and no dual-mode scrolling.
I prefer the G500's 3 thumb buttons, dual-mode scroll wheel, and the left and right scroll buttons. Logitech's software is a little more flexible as well.
The RAT looks impressive sitting on your desk but it's no G500.

I own the RAT 7 and I love it. Only gripe with it is lately I've had some mouse cursor straying issues. Meaning the mouse will be sitting there and the cursor will start to drift to the right. Not sure if it's an inbalance with the mouse or something. Other than that it is the best mouse hands down I've used.

I have really, really bad drift issues with mine. I am thinking about sending it back, to see if a replacement will fix it. This is a pretty well-known issue, but since many people don't seem to experience it, my guess is going to be that only some mice have it. Don't know if the new sensor on the white one will make a difference or not.

That thing looks like some kind of torture device.. by far the ugliest mouse I've ever seen. I'm sure it's functionality makes up for it though..

Only mouse that recieved a 10/KickAss verdict?
If im not mistaken, the Logitech G9x got a 10 verdict and I've heard better things about it than ive heard about the R.A.T. lineup.

That thing looks pretty sweet. I'd probably still stick with the black one, though. You know that white finish is going to get dingy-looking quickly, even if you keep your hands pretty clean.

what they need to do to fix this mouse's bad grip is gradually slant the sides inward towards the bottom. or curve the sides inward for grip.

I already Own the black one. Got it as soon as it hit the market. It is a good mouse. Its more geared to a FPS gamer though. I play alot of WoW so i do feel the crunch sometimes looking for extra buttons to macro to (not a big deal though). Only complaint i have about mine is if you do not use the back wheel at all it will become stiff from not being used (possible cheap barring?). Also if you plan to get one make sure to keep your mouse pad spotless and I really mean that. Just a little bit of desk gunk and really play hell with the eye. A few times mine has just stopped working mid swing and i have to franticly try to clean any spec of dirt off my mouse pad and make sure the eye is clear.
