Mozilla’s desktop browser is locked in a fierce battle for market share with Google Chrome, and by the looks of it has got its back to the wall. Just as that battle rages on, the open-source outfit is also trying to get a firm foothold in the mobile market. Conquering the mobile market isn’t going to be any easier, though. It’s important to ensure an equally good browsing experience across both phones and tablets of various sizes. To this end, Mozilla has released Firefox 9 for Android.
Firefox 9 for Android is the latest version of the browser on the platform, having just been released on Wednesday. It has been designed with tablets in mind and has therefore been optimized for large screens. These tablet-specific optimizations include full-screen portrait browsing and tab optimization. Further, the new tablet UI includes an Action Bar in the top right corner that provides quick access to preferences, add-ons and downloads. Check out the video at the bottom to see the new tablet UI in action.
Apart from these tablet-specific optimizations, Firefox for Android now also includes support for the HTML5 Input Tag for Camera Access and HTML5 Form Validation API. The former makes it possible for developers to build mobile sites and Web apps that can make use of the camera on an Android device.
I love Firefox on my PCs, but it was terrible on Android. I was way happier with the built in browser. I might try this new version again because I like the Sync option for my bookmarks. But if it doesn't fly, no big deal. I do minimal browsing on my androids anyway.
Still buggy as heck. I tried it, and when I went to google, I couldn't even type in a query of more than one word, it kept erasing the previous words with every new word. Strange. Doesn't happen in Dolphin!
