Firefox 5: What we Know so Far
Firefox 4 may be only a few weeks old, but Mozilla’s adoption of a Chrome style rapid release schedule has led to several leaks about upcoming Firefox 5 features, which believe it or not, should be released by the end of June. Users who want to gain access to the latest preview build can download a copy directly from Mozilla, or just scroll on down for a quick overview of what you can expect to see down the road.
1.) Multi Tab Select. This will allow you to close a small group of tabs, or move a select few off the tab bar to create a new window.
2.) A Brand New Tab Page Layout.
3.) Add-ons will get standardized toolbar support.
4.) File Upload Indicator.
5.) The removal of a home button, in favor of a home tab.
6.) Built in PDF Viewer / MP3 Playback decoder.
7.) Taskbar Web apps. This will allow developers to include a drop down menu from the browser tab to allow for easier site navigation.
8.) Integrated Identity Management for easy website sign in.
9.) Social Sharing from the URL bar to Facebook, Twitter, and possibly others such as Reddit, and Digg.
Some of these features might be amended or removed as the weeks move on, but given how soon they are expected to push out a final release, it’s very likely we are looking at a fairly complete list.

I'm really unhappy about certain features, such as the removal of the home button. I wish they would stop trying to change the browser so much. I'd rather just have it look like Firefox 3.6 with more speed increases. Once I downloaded Firefox 4 the first thing I did was make it look as close to Firefox 3.6 as possible.
I guess as long as they allow me to bring back my home button I'll be ok. They'll probably remove the option all together though knowing Mozilla.

Yeah we'll have to rely on skins to put everything back where it is supposed to be. T_T

The June release will probably be version 4.5. I love the idea of an integrated PDF reader. I will no longer dread clicking on a pdf link anymore.
But its not right for them to integrate social bookmarking into the browser. Who will decide which sites to include? I know google pays mozilla for every search query that originates from a firefox user. Is this an attempt to milk social networking sites as well? Doesn't seem right to me. Better to leave this feature for 3rd party addons.

Mp3 support would be a no go. its not an open codec and they would have to pay a liecense. mozilla will only use open codecs

Couldn't they just use the Lame MP3 codec? That's what Audacity uses for encoding/decoding, and it's free as far as I recall.
MPC: Get rid of or uncheck by default the Publish To Facebook option. You're really starting to piss off people with that.

The last I knew though Audacity doesn't come with LAME because that would require a license. They just happen to point to the LAME download and suggest it. That wouldn't be an ideal solution for Mozilla.

Possibly but i still doubt it because Mozilla wants an open web and there could be licenese fee problems in the future.

I don't care if they want to release a new version every few months as long as they don't break all my add-ons every time they do so. I still have addons that don't work with FF 4 yet.
Oh, and again get ride of the Publish To Facebook box or turn it off by default. Why are you trying to trick your members into posting to Facebook (or add extra steps not to)?
