Facebook Valued Higher Than eBay, Now Third Largest Web Company
It's quite a feat for a company that isn't even publicly traded yet, but Business Week is reporting that Facebook is now being valued higher than the faltering eBay. Based on the privately traded share price of $16, Facebook's total valuation is about $41 billion. eBay is only valued at $39.3 billion; although, those are real shares. The two companies Facebook is trailing are, of course, Amazon and Google. These two behemoths are valued at $74.4 billion, and $192.9 billion respectively.
Facebook's value is all tied up in the huge number of users it has. As far as we know, the company is making money, but as it is not publicly traded yet, we don't get the details. Facebook has been leveraging the notion that their eventual IPO will shoot their valuation into the stratosphere to pilfer employees from other tech companies. They often do this by offering juicy stock options.
Do you think that when Facebook goes public, it will end up valued higher than Amazon, or even *gasp* Google. 500 million friends may be a lot, but those people might not be worth 192 billion to investors.

While Facebook might be popular and supposedly 'worth a lot of moeny', they aren't nearly as diversified as Amazon and Google. Facebook is a house of cards and can crash down just as easily as it was built.

I doubt it it'll be worth that much. But then we are talking about our society...god help us if eating poop becomes a popular fad. Just about 4 years ago it was Myspace, now facebook is the new he-said=she-said gathering spot champion. Although not as popular as the bar scene for such nonsense, I can just imagine all of the excitment and intrigue a few of those folks must enjoy when combining the two. lol Anyway, point is that some other "newer" and cooler variant will come along, perhaps even named "YOUR ASS. YOUR FACEBook lol

I also find the service useless to me, but still recognize that it's a hugely (over)valued company.

Not to say the service itself is any good, but you're obviously in denial of the fact that Facebook is a multibillion dollar business. I applaud its founders as the powerful manipulators of human flaws... like the need to have friends. It's not something I recommend to people or anything, but still, you have to appreciate their achievements as a company.

I'm not in denial of anything, the only reason they make any money at all is because Mr. Suckerberg is selling all the information people post to the highest bidder. If they were truely against that sort of thing, they would shut down zynga and all the other apps that do the same thing. Also I do not have to appreciate anything they have done. I do not appreciate thieves.
