Facebook to Update Safety Protocols After Death of 17-year-old User

In the wake of the death of a 17-year old girl, Facebook has committed to improving their safety protocols. Many wanted to social networking site to add a “panic button” to flag profiles of suspected pedophiles. Facebook is instead expanding their current reporting system.
Richard Allan, director of policy for Facebook Europe reaffirmed the company’s focus on protecting its users, but said the idea of a panic button was unworkable. Commenting on the reporting system Allan said, “The system effectively handles all manner of potential abuse we see on the site, ranging from the common minor breaking of the rules, such as embarrassing pictures, to the extremely rare serious matters that are quickly escalated to law enforcement."
Facebook has managed to avoid looking out of though here, but is this enough? Some groups are still pushing for more aggressive tools to protect users. Facebook has not completely ruled out a panic button, but says more consideration is needed.

I know of someone who reported a convicted pedophile and rapist to the Facebook Admins and they... DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! That scum is still on Facebook, trolling for lost children who may see this person as a way out of whatever situation they are in. Losers.

I am for protecting people from pedo's. But I do see this being abused in the name of comedy with teens. Oh I think it would be funny to have the police investigate this person. I watched it happen in my HS not to long ago where they thought it would be a funny joke to call in a teacher so they wouldn't have to do homework. They got caught thankfully but still I see this as beeing a problem later on and it not having been thought through fully.

Depends on the geographical location, in the US in a legal sense it's 18.

In terms of sex (which is what this is about), only in 11 states. The rest use either 17 or 16, with a substantial majority (31 or 32 if you count DC) using 16.
