Facebook users know how it can be. You log in and notice you have a huge number of notifications. You find yourself dismayed as it becomes apparent that most of them are just app notification spam. You know the sort: so-and-so just answered a question about you, or what’s-his-face wants your help in Mafia Wars. Well, hopefully you won’t see quite so much of that anymore now that Facebook has ended support for the ‘notifications.send’ API.
We’re happy to see Facebook take even a small step to keep the service usable. Sure, developers may not like this so much, but Facebook did just give them the ability to request user email addresses for notification purposes. They also have the new games dashboard to play with. It is currently unclear how this will affect the newsfeed. Currently, we are still seeing a few app posts in it, and we wouldn’t mind if that went away.
Overall, this is a good move by Facebook. Even with the massive success Facebook is enjoying, they have to pay attention to the experience of users lest they become the next MySpace. Just think, that would have sounded like a good thing three or four years ago. Internet people are fickle.

If you use Firefox, look up Facebook Purity.
You run this add-on with Grease Monkey and it will hide all that garbage along with the BuddyA is now friends with BuddyK.

please add me to your mafia wars, farmville, fishville, PCville, and groups like I don't care about your group, Epic Beard Man rocks, and When I was your age I had to blow in video game cartridges to make them work. :)

THANKS FACEBOOK!!! Those notifications were super annoying. Sometimes, when I log-on, I get super excited...like, is it a party invitation to someone I haven't seen in a while? ....then, only to find out it's just simply someone wanting me to join in Mafia-wars.

...and preferably on my friends' pages themselves.. I just want to see what my friends are up to.. not the apps they're using.

You can hide them in your news feed, but unfortunately you can't do the same on your friends' pages.

Yeah, we could hide 'em. However they come right back when someone else uses said app or in my case, they're too many for me to hide all...

There is an option to hide all news feed items from a certain app; makes my life a lot easier.

But you still have to do it on an app-by-app basis. That's an unreasonable expectation.
