Or, if Excite had bought them, and not used them properly, it could have been more like $1M -> £167,000 in 10 years :)

I'm trying to remember, who were the big search engines before Google?

AOL, Yahoo, Excite, Metacralwer, Lycos...

Alta Vista and Ask for two more.  Geocities?  Was that a search engine too?

Wow, I actually faintly recall Excite from 10-11 years ago, when I was about 10 years old and starting out in the PC enthusiast business.

Sucks for them, doesn't it?

Not really. Without Larry and Sergey Google would never have amounted to anything but some optimized search algorithms. The Google we know and love (and fear) is not remotely what Excite would have produced.

That's exactly what I was coming in here to post. It likely would have lost the magic dust that made it so great if Excite had bought it.
