Every HP Shipped Next Year to Run webOS
Don't let it be said that Hewlett-Packard isn't ultra confident in webOS, the platform it inherited (and chased after) when it acquired Palm. HP head Leo Apotheker made some rather bold predictions about the future of HP, which includes shipping every PC with the ability to run webOS in addition to Microsoft's Windows. This isn't a far off future either, but next year.
Apotheker made the comments in an interview with Bloomberg, in which he said "HP has lost its soul. The first thing I wanted to do when I joined HP was listen to the people. The rank and file usually know about all the shortcomings."
Apotheker previously served as CEO of software maker SAP. Because of this experience, Apotheker told Bloomberg he'll likely buy more companies with software expertise, and is specifically looking for acquisitions that will help HP increase security and give customers more tools to analyze large amounts of data. But it's his webOS comments that are the most attention grabbing.
According to HP, programmers have kicked out some 350,000 apps for devices made by Apple, over 250,000 Android apps, and just 6,000 apps for webOS. To change that disparity, "you create a massive platform," Apotheker says. And that's exactly what he plans to do.
