Eurocom Panther 2.0 Runs with Intel Xeon X5690 Processor
Two weeks ago Eurocom added an Intel Core i7 990X processor option to its Panther 2.0 mobile server/workstation. Now the OEM has gone and fed its Panther the Xeon equivalent to that mighty chip, the six-core X5690. Like the Core i7 990X, the X5690 comes clocked at 3.46GHz on each of its six cores and has 12MB of L3 cache, but has two QPI links instead of one, supports ECC memory, and supports 40-bit physical address extensions instead of 36-bit.
The Xeon X5690 is also a much more expensive chip than the already pricey 990X, and cost of entry for a Panther decked out in Intel's finest will set you back a little over $4,000. That includes:
- Intel Xeon 5690 processor
- 6GB DDR3-1333
- Nividia GeForce GTX 470M 1.5GB GDDR5
- 250GB SATA HDD with G-Force protection
- 8X DVD burner
- 3MP webcam
- Two USB 3.0 and three USB 3.0 ports
- 9-in-1 memory card reader
Note that adding an OS will tack on another $100 or so, depending on which version you go with. So in other words, only serious users need apply, such as "software and/or database developers, training centers, military personnel, emergency relief organizations, and service organizations who must frequently travel, yet need access to power computing."
