EU Posts Sordid Details of Intel Antitrust Case
Earlier this year, the European Commission nailed Intel with a record setting $1.45 billion fine for what it construed as anticompetitive practices, and on Monday the EC published a non-confidential version of its Intel Decision laying out all the details that led to the hefty fine.
The EC seems to have taken particular exception to conditional rebates offered by Intel, listing no less than five scenarios, including rebates to Dell from December 2002 to December 2005 in exchange for purchasing exclusively Intel CPUs. But according to the paper, Intel also dangled the conditional carrot in front of Acer, HP, NEC, Lenovo, and Media Saturn Holding during various times from 2002 up until as recently as 2007.
Not only did Intel dictate how much AMD-based product each OEM could sell, but the chip maker also had clear directions on how AMD systems could be sold, according to the paper. For example, Intel payments to Acer were conditioned on Acer postponing the launch of an AMD-based notebook from September 2003 to January 2004. Lenovo was also advised to postpone a notebook launch, while payments to HP were conditioned on the OEM selling AMD-based business desktops only to small and medium enterprises, and only via direct distribution channels.
And that's only a portion of the paper. Get all the gory details here, then tell us whether you think the $1.45 billion fine was warranted or if Intel was doing what any company in its position would do.

While I don't approve of what Intel did, would AMD have done it if they could? Just playing devil's advocate. I think its wrong, but it sounds like the other companies are just as much at fault. They got greedy and wanted some extra money from Intel so they agreed to do this... they agreed to accept these "conditional rebates" to do what Intel wanted.. so why arent these companies also in hot water? If Intel is being sued over this, why arent the other companies getting sued for accepting it?

if there was ever a time AMD were to do the same thing, then they would get the same response as now with intel.
the point is that they haven't done it, if/until they do we don't have a problem with them right now. Right now it is intel who is doing bad business practice.

It's not a question of if AMD did the same thing or not, the fact is Intel is in the wrong here, at the same time I don't believe in the EU constantly wrangling money from american companies. I think they are as greedy as some of the large companies.

I'll admit these were some pretty low blows. But I still hold that most of this matter concerning matters between US businesses should have been handled by US courts, and the EU should have only focused on Intels direct dealings with EU based stores and manufacturers.

Wow, scary how a mega corporation can influence the market.
Intel should count its blessing that it only got such a small fine.
Some of that money should go to AMD for R&D.

they seem to have money to throw around. It makes $1 billion seem like a drop in the bucket

and intel sells alot

plus they are like 80% of market share?
they would not want anyone invading their turf. I think if given the choice they would rather be a monopoly

They don't want AMD to recover, they dont want Nvidia making chipsets or processors (using VIA) and they probably want to kick them out of graphics.
again, i would love to see 3 platforms
intel, AMD, nvidia with a lot of mixmatching of vidcards, chipsets, and processors

Pretty sucky of Intel, I think.
My next build is going to be based on an AMD processor, even though I've been using Intel processor's so far. If Intel had played fair to some extent, perhaps AMD would have sold more products allowing them to pump more cash into their R&D, and if not producing a break-through product, at least the competition would have benefitted us user/consumer folk.
Here today, gone tomorrow. Live life.

I knew Intel was doing this, but I hadn't realized just how bad it was.... I think Intel got lucky with a mere $1.45Billion fine, they should have got more. More countries should be doing the same, and at least a portion should be paid to AMD in compansation so they can boost their development, and once again be able to really compete with Intel.

I think U.S.A Should pursue this. I think Intel crossed the line. AMD should sue for damages.
