Apple has become precisely what they mocked in their 1984 commercial.

Back then, Jobs and Apple had moxie, now he's just a big fucking dick.

It is all your fault.  Oh, and don't forget, Apple is going to charge you MORE to spy on you, lol.

If I am not mistaken didn't Android remotely remove apps from phones without user consent/knowledge and also didn't Microsoft patent something like his for windows like a year ago? Microsoft applied for a patent that would allow them to remotely shut off unauthorized copies on windows running out in the wild. Kinda sounds like they were going after people who "jailbroke" windows.

Android removed an app that was discovered to be nothing more than malware.

And there's a HUGE difference between jailbreaking/rooting your handset and pirating an operating system. One is illegal (pirating the OS) and one is not (unless you ask Apple).

If Microsoft wants to disable pirated OS' then fine with me. I purchase my copies of Windows legally. Of course nothing is perfect, so there will be a few false positives, but that's another topic altogether

"Android removed an app that was discovered to be nothing more than malware."

Yes but they remotely accessed mobile devices running their software and removed it. I am not saying that this was a bad thing. All I am saying is that what everyone is complaining about has already happened. Unrestricted access by the manufacturer of the software on a personal device.

"And there's a HUGE difference between jailbreaking/rooting your handset and pirating an operating system. One is illegal (pirating the OS) and one is not (unless you ask Apple)."

I am not sure I understand where you draw the line. OS for a mobile device and OS for a computer. Mobile devices today are truly mobile computers. If for you mobility is the issue then when more tablets come out would you be ok with people unlocking the OS on any of those devices? Win7 or Android if it were to be locked down. If legality is the issue then Microsoft was able to get legislation passed for them that Apple was unable to do so. Technically speaking, I don't understand the real difference. An OS is just software that lets you interact with a device that allows you to perform certain tasks. Does it matter if it is on a mobile device or a more stationary one?

So you take issue with a company removing an app that does nothing but bad and evil things to your handset, will steal your data, and infect you with mobile malware without asking you? Good god man, lets hope your bank never locks your account because of unusual spending patterns!

And I think you're very VERY confused about rooting/jailbreaking. Microsoft Windows is a closed-source operating system. Whether it's the PC version, Windows XP Tablet Edition, Windows CE or Windows mobile. That means that they own the copyright to the underlying code. You have to purchase a license to run Windows. If you steal a copy of Windows for any platform (which involves using a pirated key and can also include circumventing any activation or authentic checks) then that is theft. It is pirating. You've stolen something.

Android OS is OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE! Google has released the AndroidOS SDK (Software Developer Kit), and has made it available to every. single. person. I can download the Android SDK, and make my own AndroidOS if I really wanted to (I can't program so it'll be damn near impossible for me). The underlying OS is free. I'd release my source code unto the world and other people could very easily take my OS and build upon it. Nothing illegal has transpired. Rooting your handset is like formating your laptop and installing your OS of choice. All your doing is changing the mobile OS that it's using.

By your logic, removing Windows from a laptop or desktop that came with Windows pre-installed, and installing Linux, is illegal...

"So you take issue with a company removing an app that does nothing but bad and evil things to your handset, will steal your data, and infect you with mobile malware without asking you? "

If you recall I said it wasn't a bad thing that Android removed the app, just that Google has total control over your device whenever they want it.

"Good god man, lets hope your bank never locks your account because of unusual spending patterns!"

Have you ever had your bank do this to you? I have and guess what, it is so much more trouble than it's worth. Do you know what it is like to unlock your account when you are trying to use it? Have you ever had your identity stolen either? I have. Even going through all that I would rather my bank let me spend my money and if I see a problem I will call them as I need to do to be a responsible person.

"Microsoft Windows is a closed-source operating system"

What do you think iOS is?

"You have to purchase a license to run Windows."

Just because you don't have to enter in a key doesn't mean you haven't purchased a licence. It doesn't mean the reverse either.

"can also include circumventing any activation or authentic checks"

This means hacking the OS to make it do what you want, right? Isn't that the whole point of Jailbreaking?

"By your logic, removing Windows from a laptop or desktop that came with Windows pre-installed, and installing Linux, is illegal..."

Have you ever actually read any of the paperwork that comes with a machine that has Windows pre-installed? Installing any OS other than the one provided you on that device will void any warranty the company has provided. Illegal no, but alas I already mentioned that too. Legislation.

BESIDES, this is just a patent application. No one says they have to use or implement it. Apparently Apple applies for all kinds of patents. Have you ever seen www.patentlyapple.com? There are websites just dedicated to patents that Apple applies for.

Jail broke, or stole/pirated?

Don't you have to do one to get to the other?

avatar

Caboose

Nope. They're completely different

O hai traitorware! How beautiful, how wonderful, how magnificiant. Soon the world Jobs built will fall into a heap of slag and apples will become sacred spittoons for the working man. Great days are comming when no one buys overpriced over controlled nazi apple products because of Monsieur Job's tight fistings. Let it be known that Steve Jobs is the Rot that will crush a corporation from the insides. Steve Jobs SithLord Ass of All Holes.

I honestly hope Apple does this.  I want all the crazy Apple-hugging fans to wake up the next day without a usable phone, knowing that they can't do what they want--and that they have to heel to Steve Jobs and his perfect, walled garden.  Let the free ride of jailbroken Apple devices end.

Let people see what they have really paid for, and shop accordingly.

That head on a plate of over cooked vegetables looks just disgusting, especially since it has a 5 o'clock shadow.  Ick.  It looks like a rotting head on a bed of worms.

When I first read the news about this apple patent, I initially thought it was a good thing for consumers.  But the EFF is alleging that Apple will use this patent to further lock down their devices.  And that makes sense given apple's track record.

Despite this, apple will still be successful because their products are marketed to people that don't know better and just want the fashion accessory of the iPhone, the iPad or the iPod.  Many do not realize the benefits of an open platform.  While Android is still somewhat behind Apple (depending how you look at it), most analysts predict Android's dominance because of the openness of the platform.

This further galvanizes my boycott of everything apple.

The free market is already deciding. :)

Yup, another reason to stay away from Apple

Was my Ipod, and I don't mind Itune's to much. But I would never buy anything else apple.

I just can't wait.

Yet I still say, don't like their phone, buy something else and let the *free market* pound Apple into the ground.
