DisplaySearch: iPad Shipments Push Apple Ahead of HP in Mobile PC Space
Riding the success of it's iPad tablet, Apple has leapfrogged ahead of Hewlett-Packard in both mobile PC shipments (10.2 million) and mobile market share (17.2 percent), according to data by DisplaySearch. Apple now sits on top, ahead of not only HP (15.6 percent), but also Acer (14 percent), Dell (9.9 percent), and Toshiba (8.6 percent). Note that Apple's 10.2 million shipment number includes both iPad and notebook sales.
"While we anticipate increased competition in the tablet PC market later this year with the introduction of Android Honeycomb-based tablets, Apple’s iPad business is complementing a notebook line whose shipments widely exceed the industry average growth rate," said Richard Shim, Senior Analyst at DisplaySearch. "Apple is currently benefiting from significant and comprehensive growth from both sectors of the mobile PC spectrum, notebooks and tablet PCs. Cannibalization seems limited at this point."
Out of the top five brands in the mobile market, only Apple and Toshiba posted year-on-year growth. All combined, the industry's top five players accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total mobile PC market, DisplaySearch says.
