Dell's New Vostro V130 Costs the Third of a MacBook Air
Dell on Tuesday announced the Vostro V130, the newest addition to its Vostro line and perhaps the sexiest yet. Of course, Apple also recently unveiled its new MacBook Air, a good looking machine (aesthetically) if you swing that way, but at $429 for the V130, you could buy three Vostro ultraportables for the same price as a single MacBook Air.
The 13-inch Vostro V130 measures a scant 0.65 inches at its thinnest point and weighs 3.5 pounds. A baseline configuration includes an Intel Celeron U3400 processor, 2GB of DDR3-1333 memory, 250GB (5400RPM) hard drive, Wireless-N, Bluetooth 3.0, 2MB webcam, 6-cell battery, and Ubuntu.
For $558, Dell upgrades the hard drive to 320GB (7200RPM) and trades Ubuntu for Windows 7 Home Premium. At the $778 price point, the Vostro V130 sports an Intel Core i5 470UM processor, 2GB of DDR3-1333 memory, 500GB (7200RPM) hard drive, Wireless-N, Bluetooth 3.0, 6-cell battery, and Windows 7 Home Premium.
Also of note here is the incorporation of "Hyperbaric Cooling Technology," which is really just a fancy way of saying the Vostro V130 includes a fan designed to suck cool air in.

Why are they comparing the price of the entry level Vostro to the highest spec'd MacBook Air? Compared to the entry level Air ($999), the Air is only 2x as expensive. But then again, the specs of the Air is much better than the entry level Vostro.

With the mish mash of Intel CPUs available its hard to compare laptops these days. How does the Celeron compare to the Core2 Duo to the i5> And where does the GPU matter?
Is there really a niche for this? Apple folks will only consider the Air in this size range, Windows folks will go with the easiest metric, price, and consider a netbook. Power Users will get a larger laptop.

I just outfitted the Dell Vostro V130 with an SSD, 4GB RAM and a 3 year warranty. Price: $1153
The Macbook Air 13 with the same size SSD, 4GB RAM and a 3 year warranty. Price: $1706
So, not really 1/3 the price. Still, quite a bit less expensive. The only difference is the Macbook Air has a better video card. In a business environment this is generally unimportant so the price savings there is valid.
I'd be interested in seeing an actual review of the V130.
