Dell Streak Available Thursday August 12 for $299 with Contract
We knew this day was coming, and we've now got official confirmation from Dell PR that the Dell Streak Android phone is going on sale this Thursday (August 12). Those that registered for the pre-sale can head over to www.dell.com/mobile come Thursday to pick the device up. Those that don't sign up early will have to wait 24 hours to hand over their cash, but it looks like you can still register. Early rumors about pricing seem to accurate. The Streak will sell for $299.99 with new two-year AT&T contract, and $549.99 without.
The Streak is an Android smartphone with a real tablet vibe. The screen is a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen, with a resolution of 800x480. The Streak will be packing a 1GHz Qualcomm CPU, a 5MP rear-facing camera, VGA front-facing camera, and 2GB of internal storage. There is also the usual user accessible microSD slot for adding up to 32GB of storage. Dell has reskinned the Android 1.6 user interface with its own custom UI. The home screen is designed around a landscape orientation. It really reminds you that this phone is positioned as a tablet device.
Will you be furiously checking the Dell site on Thursday? The Maximum PC review is incoming very soon. So check it out before you make the final decision. $299 for an on-contract phone is a little steep before you get the whole story.

$299 for a phone with a contract or $549 without. This is a hybrid smartphone/slate. Its trying to find its own niche. I just cannot fathom paying $299 for this Android 1.6 phone with AT&T when I can get a Droid Incredible or Droid X with Verizon for $199.
$549 to use as a tablet. I'll wait for a bigger screen and at least Android 2.1.

This phone is slick. I held one at a local cellphone store. The guy that owned the store paid a VERY large amount for it. It's massive and beautiful. Didn't get to play with it long though. So I have no real idea of how it really performs and its setbacks. but it is amazingly large and pretty ;-)

The awesome Dell Streak is coming with Android 1.6 Donut? How could they do such a thing? Michael Dell has been hanging out with Steve Jobs too much.

I don't think it would be half as bad if it wasn't using the absolutely ancient Android 1.6, I don't get that decision, Android 2 has been out since November of last year, 2.1 since January of this year and Android 2.2 is currently rolling out with the Droid 2 that is going on sale the same day as the Dell phone.
