CyberLink Afraid it Cannot Profit from Windows 7 Release

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Outside of Apple, you'd have to search far and wide to find someone not stoked about the release of Windows 7, or just take a visit to CyberLink's headquarters. The multimedia software maker pulls in most of its money from bundling PowerDVD and other apps with new PC purchases, and according to company chairman Jau Huang, Microsoft's snappy OS doesn't necessarily require consumers to replace their current systems.

Some analysts have noted that netbooks in 2010 should shoot up by 30 percent from 2009, but this too is of little consolation to CyberLink. Barring any major overhauls to existing platforms, netbooks typically are not equipped with video and audio functions necessary for CyberLink's software, Huang said.

So where does that leave CyberLink? Perhaps scrambling to make a buck in the smartphone market. Huang said there may be some business opportunities in the mobile phone market as new handsets come equipped with video and audio editing software.

avatarHm.

Two products they need to make:

Native playback of Bluray for Media Center (not the crappy hack they have now)

and

Bluray plaback for Mac.

Not huge markets in either, but there is certainly a demand.

avatarThis, boys and girls, is why

This, boys and girls, is why diversification of products and services is a good idea.  If they are too lazy or inept to find a way to profit in the industry, then too bad, so sad.

avatarAgreed.

CyberLinks software does suck. I bought a copy that boasted free upgrades from the website just so I could have 5.1 surround support. Kept the key, the online receipt, everything, and when I tried to upgrade Customer Service just ignored all emails. I even submitted my problems to "The Dog" for review, but never made the article. In my opinion they were shady and their software was third rate garbage. The universe eventually rights itself... and this article is proof!

avatarAnd??

Okaaaay....and this is important because? If PowerDVD isn't necessary on new systems running Windows7, OH WELL, that's life. Netbooks are popular, and if they don't need or can't use Cyberlink's software, that's just too bad for them!
