Custom Steampunk Laptops Now Available For Preorder
Richard Nagy's drool-inducing Victorian steampunk-inspired laptop has graced top-ten lists Internet wide thanks to its retro design and sheer clockwork gear-sporting badassery. Apparently, while we were staring wistfully at images of the rig and wishing we owned one, people with better problem-solving skills than us contacted the creator and asked if they actually could buy one off of him. After thousands of inquiries, Nagy just announced that he's accepting preorders for the first batch of custom Victorian steampunk laptops. The price: a cool $5,500.
You better get them while they're cheap, though; $5,500 is the discount price for the first batch only. Future purchases will cost the full-blow $7,500. In exchange for all that cash, Nagy's promising cutting-edge internal components and a key-shaped USB drive that doubles as the actual key for a brass lock on the computer. Customers will also be able to select the design of the LCD lid, choosing whether or not they include spinning clockwork gears, gold foil maps, engraved or photo-etched brass plates, or anything else the mad scientist whips up. Nagy also plans on letting users choose the color of the wood stain, the font and metals used for the keys, LCD lighting styles, and more.
Sorry, Mac fans; due to Apple's proprietary designs, only a PC version will be available at first, although Nagy says that "if you have your heart set on Mac, there are many simple ways to install the Mac OS on a PC laptop with almost no noticeable differences in function."

For all of you whining about its 'usefulness', these are meant to be displayed as art, just look at his keyboards.

In my experience, laptops don't last very long. They tend to become broken and outdated faster than desktops. That's a lot of money to spend on a laptop you'll use only for a couple years. I'd be much more interested in the keyboards on his site, because I could use that for a much longer period.

While I agree that they are fantastic looking, I don't see much pratical use for them as a laptop. They wouldn't be convienent to carry around and you'd be screwed if you dropped one. Some of the keyboard layouts wouldn't thrill people looking to game (I didn't read the specs so I'm not even sure if it's made for it). However, they'd be great as a house decoration or centerpiece/display if you had a nice home and themed it certain ways.

Hey Slick,
In his announcement, Nagy said he plans on user smaller, lighter components than the ones used in the model he's already built. That way, maybe somebody could actually, you know, lug them around without slipping a disc.
The thing's super cool, but way out of my price range. Even if I saved my lunch money for a year, it would take a lot of PB&J to make an extra $5500.

Now that is a piece of art. After looking at the website, and seeing the prices, I will never have the money to order those. *sob*
