It would be a great deal if the 2x16 kit was in fact 32gb, or if there were a 2x8 kit that was 16gb...

I've always wondered if there is a difference in performance between SO-DIMMs and full sized DIMMs if they have the same speed, timing and voltages.

What is the reason behind the drop in voltage? Would it really make a difference in battery life?

It does make a difference. Lower voltage = less power draw. It's a trick I've seen in a few low power PC write ups. What I've never seen is a measurment between 16gb of 1.5v memory and 1.35v memory.
