Considering that no CPU or Chipset exist that can take advantage of these speeds, Buying this ram is a waste of money, & is only for people who want to feel good that they own the "best" of something. It's a shame tho, Having hardware that could support this ram at its full speed would be winsauce!! Are you listening Intel???

What processor could I use this to the fullest with? What proc even _exists_ that could utilize this ram to its 3Ghz potential? Google is rife with benchmarks claiming that "there's no significant performance gain to be found over 1333 Mhz" (which I don't want to believe).

avatar

TMc51

It's pretty much correct, actually. You will never see any significant gains with faster RAM. The only people this matters for are those who run benchmarks.

Even if I had the dough to spend $750 on RAM I'd wait. The PS4 has 8GB of DDR5 so I'm sure it's coming to PC soon!

Can the rather wimpy AMD Jaguar chips therein even take advantage of the speeds offered by this "unified GDDR5 memory structure"? I'm going to assume that the GPU can, but aren't these the same AMD chips that max out at 1600 Mhz or, possibly, 1866 Mhz?

Even if the chips are "rated" to handle GDDR5 speeds, would there be marked improvement? Scores of internet benchmarks claim that past 1333 Mhz the computational ability/internal overhead of the processor become the bottleneck on performance.

gddr5 != ddr5. ddr5 probably won't come out in 4~5 years, and gddr5 is based on ddr3. And yes, there are rumors that AMD kaveri will support gddr5. http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2013/3/5/amd-kaveri-unveiled-pc-architecture-gets-gddr5.aspx

You mean GDDR5, it's used in graphics cards today. Consoles will NEVER surpass PC's in tech.

Mediziner said, "You mean GDDR5"

Can you explain the difference between DDR5 and GDDR5?

avatar

SodaAnt

DDR5 does not exist yet. GDDR5 is based on DDR3, and has more memory bandwidth due to larger prefetch and other things, but is still based on DDR3. Then DDR4 is coming out quite soon, starting on servers. Maybe in another five years we will see DDR5.

Hey! Sorry for the delay in response guys! I apologize. Here on GameStops website in the PS4 specs it says 8GB GDDR5. Maybe DDR5 and GDDR5 are different, as far as I know they are relatively the same, yet... I could be wrong.

Still waiting for DDR4 dammit!

And it STILL has the world's crappiest heat sink in line with all the other crappy Vengeance heat sinks. The heat sink is two thin pieces of metal held together with two bent tabs, one of each end. The thin metal is attached to the memory chips by pieces of thermal sticky tape.
God help you if you push down too hard on the top of the memory module to seat it firmly (the top of the memory module does NOT reach the top of the heat sink) . The metal sides bend out, the tabs at the end stop holding, and the tape comes off of the chips. Usually one or both of the sides simply fall right off.
Mind you, I only buy Corsair memory and love it but boy am I careful now in seating the modules.

Heatsinks are pointless on modern ram. See: Samsung DDR3 that reaches 2100mhz from a stock of 1600 with no heatsinks. http://www.overclock.net/t/1210482/samsung-2x4gb-low-voltage-ddr3-1600-kit-ocing-to-2400-discussion Heatsinks are a marketing gimmick on ram.

"Corsair's Insanely Fast Vengeance Extreme RAM is Crazy Expensive"

The word "is" needs to be capitalized. Yes, it's just a two-letter word, but it's a verb. A verb in a heading is always capitalized. Don't you guys have editors?

avatar

illusionslayer

They have like 3 people working on this. The magazine articles all go through editors at Future, but apparently the website doesn't deserve such resource allocation.

avatar

That's over twice the RAM "speed" supported by my current processor, and the better part of twice what the APUs support. Shoot, my allegedly modern 990fx motherboard only claims to support up to 2000 Mhz RAM, and that's only by overclocking.

avatar

AFDozerman

Too bad they aren't cheaper. These speeds would be great for chips with iGPUs and APUs. Heck, with some of the procs on market right now, you could easily outrun your processor with this ram.

avatar

limitbreaker

Sure but if you're going to buy a budget system with an integrated gpu, I would doubt that you'd spend a fortune on exotic ram that your cpu may or may not take advantage of. Amd desktop cpu are officially rated to control 1866mhz and I think Intel is even lower.

avatar

AFDozerman

Yeah, as current tech stands, but just assuming in a perfect world where I could just plug ram in as I wanted willy-nilly and where this was cheaper, this would be great.

I love how DDR3 prices were at an all time low ($70 for 4GB) then by some force of wizardry they just all of a sudden went back up to being $207 for 4GB.

avatar

illusionslayer

What the hell are you talking about? 4gb sticks average $30 and 2x8gb sets average $110 right now.

I could buy a 2x8 DDR3 2400 or a 4x8 DDR3 1600 for $200.

avatar

lordfirefox

Hey genius at the time I wrote the comment NewEgg was selling 4GB kits for $207. They've since dropped back down. I'm not sure what caused the spike in prices for that week but it was rather irksome to go and try and buy an 8GB kit and find they were posting them for $224.

They are $169.99 USD at this time of this posting.

They did? For what RAM speeds? I mean, a cursory search of the tech websites show that I can get 16 GB of RAM, in only 2 DIMMs even, for under 200 bucks. If my cheap-o copy of Windows weren't restricted to 16 GB of RAM, which I currently have, I'd be jumping up to 32 GB just because lol.

Wow - those are pure tech porn!
