Congress will bend over and take what google has to offers them

avatar

Thoren

It's all about control of the slaves citizens.

When Google doesn't jump at the offer and agree to police the internet, congress will just use it as an excuse to add another department of beauracracy and call for mandatory national internet firewalls (in the name of security, no doubt) to "protect" all of us.  They will decide what is fit for you to see and read and listen to, because obviously we are all a bunch of children and pirates who need and want big brother to protect us from everything, including ourselves.

The time for the next American revolution is coming.
Bring the power back to the people...

GreenTurtle

Maybe they can ask China how they set up the great firewall of China to implement here.

Grocery stores sell food that allows you to make meals at home, therefore depriving restaurants of sales.  GROCERY STORES are enabling theft of potential money from restaurants.  Somebody needs to stop big grocery before all the restaurants go out of business.

This has nothing to do with piracy and media companies.

This has everything to do Google being a New Money company that refuses to be beholden to Old Money and Career Politicians.

Old Money's solution: take over Google or destroy it.  Their tool: Career Politicians.

Don't believe me?  Tell me who the former Senator Dodd is working for now......

Mark my words - the super rich are after all of your cash and possessions and resources.  They will stop at nothing to get everything you own.  There are a lot of career politicians lining up at the door to help them do it to be entered into the Old Money hall-of-fame.  The Tea Party is just the newest crop of trainees.

It figures, in all honesty. Here's the thing. If I go out and steal a pack of gum from a store, the store doesn't lose a sale, they loose the price the gum cost them. If I'm stealing it, it means i am not going to buy it. Figure the same thing with downloadable songs. Except the songs cost nothing, because they are downloads. How is this costing them billions of dollars? Because they are stupid enough to think that 1 billion illegally downloaded songs= $1 billion dollars lost. I myself make music (http://soundcloud.com/projectmanhattan/lone-wolf-final) and release it for people to listen to for free. Then, when they wish (and when I have it mastered), they can buy it if they like it, and to support me. Countless people have told me that they've downloaded my songs for free, but I don't care. Why? Because those same people (who were not going to buy my song anyways) will tell their friends about my music, who will tell their friends. That is how I get hired to do live shows. It's plain and simple. The modern musician has to be able to do live shows, and profit off of them. The recording industry gets mad when they hired musicians with no stage presence, who NEED to thrive off of downloads. They hired the wrong talent, and now they're paying for it, and blaming everybody else.

avatar

Ghok

So true. Not just the modern musicians, but historically speaking too. It's only in the last little while that the industry set up a nice little racket. If a musician wants to go that route, then power to them, but it's pretty clear that most would rather just do it their way.

avatar

Zachary K.

welcome new CEO of google! congress would like to speak with you....

avatar

bling581

I'm tired of seeing the bogus "piracy is costing us billions of dollars" line being thrown out there. It's no doubt that it's costing them money, but their figures are way off. When someone downloads something they wouldn't have paid for to begin with then it's not costing the industry anything. But I'm sure they count that as money lost because they're idiots and try to bloat the figures for their benefit.

Our government has better things to worry about than combating piracy and it just goes to show you how many politicians are in the pockets of the entertainment industry. Why pay money to fight piracy when you can get the government and tax dollars to do it for you?

avatar

Biceps

Agreed. Maybe our friends over at Google need to get themselves some congressmen in their pockets?  Welcome to America!

avatar

bling581

Oh I'm sure they already do!

avatar

GreenTurtle

I'm pretty sure there are more important and pressing matters for our Government to address. I agree with the other posters. Google is not the internet police.

avatar

Fecal Face

When did google become the internet police?

avatar

schmag

so we are having a congressional hearing about googles stand on piracy??? we have an unagreed upon budget sitting here threatening to close the big GOV. and we are F/N around with the entertainment industry???? I say throw the damn entertainment industry out they don't have any new artists/music worth spending my money on anyway. (oh wait is that why they lose money).

the internet is an OPEN place in the US. where we can find what we want when we want it. we use search to find what we are looking for. forcing search giants to censor their listings totally gimps at least the idea of the internet.

why the hell is it google's job to fight piracy anyway??? they shouldn't be liable for their search results, they aren't commiting the crime. I would tell the entertainment industry where to stick it.

avatar

Ghok

Google's profiting off of pirating sites is a valid issue, but if they claim to be trying to get rid of them, I believe them. There should be a reasonable level of lee-way, but I don't know enough about how Google runs to know what that would be.

Honestly, if the police want to go after pirating sites you'd think they'd want Google linking to them. Oh wait, the police have better things to do.

avatar

marcoshid

Congress needs to STFU and get some real work done.

avatar

Why stop at Google? Is it not the fault of MS, Apple, Linux, BSD, and every other OS maker for making software that can digitize things to be downloaded on the Internet? Is it not the fault of IE, FF, Chrome, Opera, and every other browser for allowing you to actually access the Internet? Is it not the fault of every Internet ready device for not blocking you from accessing the Internet? Is it not the fault of the content creators for actually creating the content that people would rather pirate than pay for? Is it not the fault of God, Allah. or other deities for allowing human beings to have free will?

Please make publish to facebook opt-in, not opt-out.

avatar

Danthrax66

It's the broken copyright system's fault. Get rid of it bands make money doing live shows you can't copy the live experience so just offer the music free and if it is good people will come to see it.

avatar

warptek2010

Interesting point. I just noticed recently that one of my favorite bands (RUSH) for the last 10 to 15 years or so were releasing albums and doing short to moderate tours. Basically winding down the live shows. Now all of a sudden, they decided not to release new material on any actual physical media but instead release mp3's for downloading and as they are approaching their 60's are now touring non stop! I guess that makes more economic sense.

avatar

aarcane

not only is it not google's job to be the copyright police for the internet, they downright have no right to do so.  As for removing apps from their marketplace, after recieving a complaint and evaluating it for validity, if it proves that an app really is infringing on specific rights, or breaking specific laws, it should be removed.  nothing more or less, except a similar treatment in other realms of google's domain.

avatar

Gezzer

What I think is really funny is most of the downloaders I know never use google to look for torrents or any downloads of that nature. How many people do you know that find them that way? Most people who do do a lot of sharing use a established site like PB or Iso.

I'd say 99% of the torrent scam/trojan downloads come from less established sites. So if anything they should be all for the google links, scare n00bs away from filesharing.

Like it's been mentioned before it's a lot of failing around and grasping at straws trying to find some way to stop the so called "loss of potential revenue". Like how do you really get a firm number on something that's classed as potential? It's like those stupid car ads say "higher projected resale value", WTF? I could say I have a "potential" to make a mil a year, but is it really going to happen? I wish. <sigh>

I just read something interesting. There wasn't supposed tp be such long copyright terms. Before 1979 when they passed a bill, copyrights were for 10 years. Then it was "public domain". Now nothing since 1979 will go into the PD till 2050. Who do you think benefits most from this? I'm pretty sure that most artists don't. It's the big publishing companies that do.

avatar

bittertruth

Nice catch. Also, Google is for now a golden egg laying goose esp. for big corps. It's socio-economical impact is massive. Google can play a key component for anything. I read how it played major role in election. Some even accused of intentional higher search rating for certain keywords. I think if you see the market share, everyone is towards google-bound searches. I don't know what is bing, I don't know what is yahoo search, but even a small street kid in india would know what google is. Therefore, small stir on it's brain and self-favoring manipulative actions could bring selfish gain for those who've always wanted to do so.  I think this news is the reflection of that same ongoing selfish lobbying effort. As far as I'm concerned, piracy must be stopped, but not in a sense hindering once freedom of it's use even after paying for it. What's the use of paying for a movie that you can't play it on your portables but only on dvd player.  And, I think the main core of piracy starts here. Its the anguish among the customers mindset that drives them nuts and hence piracy begins.

As a reminder, Yes Google hosted ads which linked to malicious sites. Later on, I think just few months ago, they weeded out lot of those. Google is a spammer by itself, it sends you all the periodicals to entice you to buy adwords services. And Yes, Google has it's evil side, it's search spiders kept log of companies' secret documents and stuffs. Didn't you know how vulnerable companies were who poorly maintained the security features of their sites and Google would show all their stuffs to malicious attackers or say searcher. Highly talented searcher with evil intention can still cook something up but I think that's rare now, since, Google has been patching every flaw on it's command set.

If Google starts to combat piracy and narrow it's extent of search realm, it'll meet the fate of once king of search 'Altavista'. You've a sharp knife , and you are supposed to use it to cut fresh vegetables and make meals what if someone uses it to stab others. You can't make it blunt. It's utility will be lost. And those culprits have it's place, in jail. Just speaking metaphorically. Let this job be done by concerned groups, let them create another DRM thing , let their mind play and leave Google alone.

avatar

Danthrax66

EXACTLY

It's all bullshit and it doesn't actually help the artist which is what the laws were designed to do in the first place.

avatar

Danthrax66

The U.S. government is a joke, we need to change it from the ground up because as of now the only people that can remove the corruption are the people that are corrupt. Democracy and Capitalism will always fail, if there is a way to better yourself by being in office then we will never have representatives that act in favor of the people. Anyone in Congress, the presidency, the senate, etc. should be paid nothing and only have their basic needs provided for, make it what it was originally supposed to be a public service job. We've gotten so ridiculously far away from the original intentions of the founding fathers it is ridiculous, and one of the biggest issues is the two party system that they warned about when this country was founded. Add on to that the blatant disregard for most of the constitution and we are basically fucked.

And google needs to stop being a bunch of fucking pussies they could probably buy the U.S. with the amount of debt we are in. But don't worry anonymous will, hopefully, start straightening things out.

Also when they make downloading a felony just shoplift the CDs then the industry will understand what it is like to actually lose revenue. And no it isn't stealing from the artists they make shit from record sales, torrent the album buy a t-shirt or a concert ticket.

As always:

FUCK THE RIAA

FUCK THE MPAA

FUCK CONGRESS

FUCK THE TEA PARTY

avatar

Biceps

I have been thinking a lot lately, and think it is time for a REAL third party - I agree... F*CK the Tea Party.

What you do you think about we start the: "FUCK ME? FUCK YOU! Party".  Then we can get ourselves into gov't and finally go after corrupt polititians, evil banks, stupid music labels and innovation-killing intellectual property laws designed specifically to squelch creativity?

Who is with me?  FUCK ME???!! FUCK YOU!!! in 2014!!!

avatar

Danthrax66

I agree both parties are complete idiots, what we need is no parties just individuals standing on their own presenting their own ideas. Washington had no party and most of the foudning fathers despised the two party system and warned it would be the downfall of the US. Sweden/France have a much better system. Also anyone that says SOCIALISM IS BAD!!! needs to stop using the roads/water/schools/electricity/phones/buses/sidewalks and they should start shoveling and plowing the streets. Also all of your grandparents/parents better not be using medicaid/medicare/S.S. nnd you shouldn't ever go on unemployment or disability. It's all socialist and it's the way it should be a country of our wealth (well the gov't fucked up and stopped taxing corporations *facepalm* but in general wealthy) should be able to implement working social policies. But it has long been the case that the GOP don't give a fuck about people and want to let corporations have free range. I would vote for a party other than the Dems if we had a viable thrid party that wasn't bat shit insane. But we don't so I settle for the party that doesn;t seem like hate mongering religious zealots. But that is just my stance.

the next major election is 2012...

avatar

CPTBMan

No:

FUCK DEMOCRATS

FUCK SOCIALISTS

FUCK COMMUNISTS

FUCK UNIONS

FUCK YOU

The Tea Party rocks!  Only sensible, patriotic people left in America.

avatar

Danthrax66

I also forgot that blind patriotism (like what you display) is terrible. That is how Hitler was capable of the things he did, people blindly followed him under the banner of being patriotic. I support the troops, I understand their sacrifices, but I want the wars to end so our fellow Americans serving in the military aren't in danger for no reason. Afghanistan is a cluster fuck and has always been one. We are attempting to do the same thing the Russians failed at doing before the Berlin wall fell. And the best part is most terrorists come from Saudi Arabia and are funded by the part owners of Fox News, and they are making money by arming terrorists to fight our soldiers while they tell us through Fox news that we need to be in the middle east kicking ass. It's called a military industrial complex and it is the worst thing you can possibly have in a country.

avatar

Caboose

*facepalm*

Fail troll is fail!

avatar

Danthrax66

You are an idiot. If you like getting raped in the ass by corporations then vote for the tea party, they started out with good intentions but quickly turned into a bunch of corporate tools. America is ass backwards and the tea party is just trying to accelerate our demise if you look at countries in the EU they have way more social programs and aren't nearly as bad off as we are because they aren't in 3 god damn wars that have no purpose and they don't let corporations dodge taxes. But yeah your right we should go back to having to work 12 hour days with no weekends off getting paid pennies, because that is exactly how it used to be in this country before unions. Go get an education you dumb ass.

But anyway good job troll member for 9 hours... hahahaha I hate people like you.

avatar

cc3d

yea, and let google work on their budget while they're at it!  Chances are, Google would make some good cuts, like 75% of government employees STARTING AT THE TOP!!!

avatar

warptek2010

This is nothing more than a blatant payback to the entertainment industry for helping elect certain politicians.

I won't say who, let's just say this sort of pandering to special interest in exchange for contributions, is supposed to be illegal.

Google, I like you, many of us do, really.... don't cowtow to these sanctimonious A**holes. Tell em where to go.

avatar

benicoletti

Well lets just hope the gov't shuts down so that google can keep providing its free search engine otherwise we may all shutdown

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Google is to be the new Internet Police?

Seriously, a private company is supposed to control the security of the entire Internet? Oh, no conflict of interest possible there.

Google should have ZERO responbility for policing the Internet.

avatar

SrKag

Nothing for Google to do. Its just like pawning off the job to somebody else to get the job done for free.
