Confirmed: Windows 7 for Netbooks Won't be Gimped
Posted 09/25/09 at 03:30:00 PM by Paul Lilly
Blame your OEM vendor -- not Intel or Microsoft -- if your next netbook sports a cut down version of Windows 7, because no such restrictions are being put in place, Microsoft confirmed. Nor will the three application limit for Windows 7 Starter be a part of the deal.
"OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," said a Microsoft U.K. spokesperson. "[But] Starter is an entry version and doesn't have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn't there anymore."
It will be interesting to see how OEMs respond and how future netbook pricing shakes out. Windows 7 Starter only comes in 32-bit form, which isn't a big deal for netbooks that typically sport just 1GB of RAM anyway, but other missing features include Aero Glass, Taskbar Previews, and Aero Peek, among others.

No reason at all to use Windows Basic
Submitted by DriZzLe on Fri, 09/25/2009 - 7:04pm
There is absolutely no reason to use the Basic version when the "Regular" versions work fine with all the bells & whistles(Aero & such)on Netbooks.
I have an EEEpc 900a with a 32 gig ssd & 2 gigs of ram & run 7 Pro flawlessly. Boots in 5 seconds & full Aero.
Ditto for me

Win 7 pro is nice and snappy, just hope there's a bios upgrade for me soon to nock my screen res up from 600 high to the newer 768 px high spec I heard is coming out on newer netbooks. Have to do a lot more scrolling but still, no problems with Aero or any other pro features and startup is quick.

Thank you so much for pointing that out. I have a similar EEE 1000HE that I was worried wouldn't run Win7.

FANTASTIC and straight from the horses mouth!
The only NON-Spyware version of Windows I've found is the Volume Licenced Copy from Michael AuYeungs 8in1XP-CD
I'm so glad Microsoft is allowing OEM's and ODM's to use Versions of Windows previously Labelled as "Illegal"
It's such a strange World we live in where all the Illegal Spyware filled Copies of Windows are Called LEGAL by Microsoft and the only Legitimate "LEGAL" copy was called "Illegal"
Hey Guys...

Bill Gates is welcome to enter my contest for a Free Copy of Windows 7 Ultimate when it comes out on Oct 22nd if he is the 1st person to prove that Windows 7 is safer for the end users than what Microsoft claims are "Illegal" copies of VLK-XP-SP2 under the Rules of the contest as stated in a previous post!
AND
even if Bill is unable to prove that Windows 7 is more safe to the end users as stated in said contest, I might know a guy that can swing a deal and we might be able to get Bill an "Illegal" copy of Windows to make his system much more safe to use than those "Legal" copies of Windows 7
Whadaya ya say Bill, Wanna be famous?

See kids, criminals don't have proof and refuse to look at the proof and refuse to test my claims!
They just slander the innocent to protect the Criminal Enterprise called Microsoft!
You should do some research before you spout off!
Do you have any idea why Windows 7 takes 8 minutes to fully format a 2GB thumbdrive and Windows XP only takes 6 seconds to Fully Format the same disk ?
Of course you don't, cuz you just make stuff up and call those who actually do the research criminals!

*crack open law book/wiki*
In the West, criminal cases usually place the burden of proof on the prosecutor (expressed in the Latin brocard ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non que negat, "the burden of proof rests on who asserts, not on who denies"). This principle is known as the presumption of innocence, and is summed up with "innocent until proven guilty," but is not upheld in all legal systems or jurisdictions. Where it is upheld, the accused will be found not guilty if this burden of proof is not sufficiently shown by the prosecution.

Periodhyphenunderscore, you still haven't shown us proof. Maximum Pc isn't going to post non existent info to us here, so why don't you? Post a link to this 'magical' source of info and we won't grief you about these bogus claims. And while you're at it, what "legal" copy of windows do you mean? XP Black? Some tricked up OS X hacked windows? What? Tell us please.
I think it's funny periodhyphenunderscore,
that you believe Windows is spyware. You have been tooting this horn of

PROOF!
Install Free AVG and a screen capture utility with ANY version of Windows you like!
Allow only AVG to connect to the Internet within your Firewall (I used Sygate)
Now open Firefox and see if you can access the Internet!
Of course you can because I'M NOT THE ONE LYING HERE!
Then install Drivecrypt 4.0 available at 2 cows and create an encrypted disk!
No problems and no errors right?
At least not untill the encrypted disk is opened so your encryption key is located in RAM!
Once your key is located in RAM, Windows 7 gives you a BSOD telling you that the Contents of RAM have been copied to your hard drive!
The BSOD only lasts 2 seconds so you will have to photograph it to read it completely!
Then after reboot you will recieve a message that Windows would like to connect to the Internet to find a solution to the problem and will prevent you from reopening your encrypted volume untill you do so!
and YES, Maximum PC does have this photographic evidence and YES, it was sent to them this morning to Doctor@maximumPC.com
and YES, you will still deny that Microsoft is spyware even after testing these claims!
because your a Liar!
and thats a FACT
Your proof is flawed
Submitted by COMMANDER_COOK on Sat, 09/26/2009 - 3:01pm
Symatec acquired Sygate in 2005. If what you're using is branded as Sygate, then it's probably just not compatible with 7. And Drivecrypt 4.0 isn't compatible with anything past XP, which is why it BSODs, genious!

We can all argue about who is right or wrong all night long. What MOST of us mean by "Give us proof" is for you to post a link to some pics, or a written document claiming that Windows 7 is spyware. Judging by how you have given us detailed instructions as to how to make Windows go BSOD and die, sending all our information to Microsoft, please attempt to document it. If you do successfully document it, you will have made my year, and I will go back to my default installation of XP for my new PC, and will never, ever buy ANY new OEM or Microsoft version of Windows.
Most likely none of us believers in the great under-dog that is Win 7 will even try to refute your claims (myself included) untill we see actual factual proof of one big giant spyware OS. If you can't at all provide VISUAL not posted on a forum information, then all you are seeming to be is an alarmist and a troll for no good reason. That being said, if you are right, I'll go back to all of my post against you and editthem in your favor.
