comScore: Android Tops Apple in Smartphone Market Share
To say it's been a good quarter for Google's Android platform is an understatement. Back in August 2010, Android trailed behind Apple in smartphone market share by 4.6 percentage points. But for the 3 month average ending November 2010, Android sits on top of Apple with a 26 percent share of the market, compared to Apple's 25 percent share, according to new data by comScore.
"After several months of strong growth, Google Android captured the #2 ranking among smartphone platforms in November with 26.0 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Apple accounted for 25.0 percent of smartphone subscribers (up 0.8 percentage points), followed by Microsoft with 9.0 percent and Palm with 3.9 percent.," comScore notes.
Android posted the biggest point change of them all, and by a wide margin. While Google moved up 6.4 percentage points, Apple was the only other company to post a gain, and by less than 1 percentage point.

"It's just like the big PC market versus the little market that Apple has with their Macs. You've simply got more manufacturers making the devices. It doesn't mean the experience is any better."
This isn't necessarily true. The only good example I can think of that would apply is when the consumer is clueless about technology or doesn't know what they want. Everyone including my Mom has heard of the iPhone and Apple, so I would think the majority of sales isn't influenced by the simple number of devices on the market.

I think it's a given that Android would eventually pass IOS in market share due to the fact that there are simply more providers and more manufacturers making Android devices. The fact that Android only beat Apple which is on one provider (even the worst one) and sells only one device by ONE percentage point is nothing to get excited about.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the market share when the iPhone launches on Verizon.

I have been waiting a long time to finally shove it in Apple's face. We. Beat. You. Yes we did!
