CompactFlash Announces Fifth Generation Removable Storage Card
Cramming more into a smaller space is an on-going quest for flash storage. The CompactFlash Association today has announced a new set specs for flash storage that bump the current storage limit of 137GB to as much as 144 petabytes (PB).
These fifth generation (5.0) specs increase the addressing from 28-bits to 48-bits, allowing for the exponential gain in capacity. The new specs also include safeguards for photo and video. It is possible to set an “optional quality of service framework” that establishes a minimum level of performance. With the 5.0 standard as much as 32MB can be loaded into a single transfer action, versus the current 128KB. Besides allowing for more RAW images to be quickly shot, the odds of having a dropped video frame are greatly diminished.
There’s no estimate for how long it will take the new specs to work their way onto the market, but it’s a good bet it will be months before the 5.0 spec cards show up.
