College Professor Equates "Nerd" and "Geek" to Racial Epithets
Times sure have changed in the last couple of decades. Where calling someone a "geek" or "nerd" may have been viewed as derogatory back before the turn of the century, that isn't the case anymore. Still, should we be using the terms as loosely as we do today?
David Anderegg, a professor of psychology at Bennington College, doesn't think we should. According to Anderegg, these words serve to perpetuate stereotypes, are just as damaging as racial epithets, and should be avoided.
But again, nerd and geek don't have the same connotations as they did when Anderegg went to grade school, and while he concedes that they can be compliments in some areas of the country, in most of America he says these are people to avoid. He says that a geek suggests a person with special expertise, while a nerd suggests social ineptness, and neither are flattering.
Moreover, Anderegg says the workforce suffers because young people often associate nerds and geeks with fields such as math, science, and computer science.
"The best way to combat this is put it to bed, banishing 'nerd' and 'geek' to the linguistic dustbin," Anderegg said.
Just don't banish the world "tool," because it's the one we most want to use right now.

Lets just do away with those words and use the british term boffin? Being from the US I had never heard this term until I started watching alot of BBC America (Top Gear is now my all time favorite show) and I had to look it up to see what it even meant. I really like being called a geek but boffin somehow has a nice ring to it.

I don't know what's more pathetic, that this "professor" actually feels strongly enough to research this subject, or the fact that he was actually paid to do it. Wait...yes I do, FIRE HIS ASS Bennington College. Lest my Bola made from used mouse balls find your faces! most of us who have earned the moniker "Geek" or "Nerd" are quite proud of it thank you.

I fly my geek flag proudly; I take geek as a compliment. They're only words; they have no power over you that you yourself do not give them.

Damn, they better not banish the word geek to the dustbin, I worked long and hard to attain my level of computer expertise so I could earn that tag.
Oh yea, and this guy is a complete dipshit.

In other news, "college professor" equated to "moron that shouldn't be allowed to have his job".

I wanna be a socialogy/psychiatry professor when I grow up. So I can say stupid things that make no sense and get paid for them.
I'll start drinking heavily now to prepare for the exams.

My girlfriend and friends call me a geek and nerd all the time, then call me a retard in the same sentence. But they all look up to me because I have this mysterious ability to make things work properly. I'm happy to have people call me the G word or the N word (nerd) because then everybody knows I'm the guy who has the cool home theatre/computer/electronic gadgets setup in a way that just makes everything mesh fantastically to provide a truer experience of technology use. However, in high school I was a 3-sport jock who loved computers, so what am I to do?
Ahhh, Betty Childs, we love you when you're mad.

"The best way to combat this is put it to bed, banishing 'nerd' and 'geek' to the linguistic dustbin," Anderegg said.
That statement is both ridiculously naive, and pretty much the opposite of the truth. The more forbidden a word becomes, the more powerful it is. The words that are least powerful are the ones we hear every day--the ones that are so common that we don't think twice about hearing them. "Cunt" is an extremely "bad" word because of how rarely we hear it--it's even less common than "fuck". If we all went around using the word "cunt" all the time, very quickly people would tire of hearing it and nobody would think twice about it when they did. The same has pretty much happened with "nerd" and "geek".
This guy is a professor? Sigh.

Tell me, how is his definition of geek a bad thing??? It's especially paradoxical coming from a professor who I'm assuming studied for his degree, and has special expertise in his fields!? /tool lol

Geek and Nerd in the same sense as racial slurs? Put down the pipe and research something a little more constructive to society.

Frankly, I think the professor is an asshat, although tool works as well.
Some of us revel in being called nerds or geeks - it is an affirmation of our technical prowess, and a compliament.
Someone should tell him to go get a real job.
