Chrome OS Netbook Waves Goodbye to the Caps Lock Key
Google yesterday lifted the curtain from its CR-48 Chrome OS netbook (if you want to get your mitts on one, you'll have to apply for the Pilot Program and make a compelling argument of why you're a solid candidate), and may have killed the Caps Lock key in the process.
To the shock and horror of overactive forum posters and hyper Facebook users everywhere, Google got the bright idea to replace the Caps Lock key with a search key, and you know what? WE'RE PLEASED AS PUNCH THEY DID!
"We expect this will improve the quality of comments across the Web," a Google employee joked.
While said in jest, the employee's comments ring true, and we wouldn't be heartbroken if all notebook vendors followed suit. If they did, IT WOULD TAKE A TON MORE WORK TO TYPE LIKE THIS, ensuring that if someone feels the need to shout, it will be worth shouting about.
That's not to say there aren't some legitimate uses for the Caps Lock key, and if you're one of the few who rely on it, don't fret. Google says you can easily convert the search key back to a Caps Lock key in the settings menu (Wrench > Settings > System).

I was just thinking yesterday how much I hate the Caps Lock key. I wouldn't miss it. While they're at it, let's get rid of a few more:
F Lock - Not sure Microsoft is perpertrating this one anymore, but I have a keyboard with it. YUCK!
Scroll Lock - Did anyone ever use this except accidentally?
` and ~ - Is this key really necessary?
Pause / Break - Do any programs actually respond to this anymore?
SysRq - Sorry I don't use a mainframe anymore. Can't we put something else here?

Leave the tilde key outta this! Its useful to express approximations. I agree with ~90% of your post. Oh, and the pause/break key I use all the time in conjunction with the WIN key.
The devil that is the caps lock key really needs to be slain, though.

I like the idea of switching the caps lock key for something else. I just wish I could do it on my keyboard, as I never use that key.

K... One of the complaints I often see is that people accidently hit the caps lock key. Now, when they hit the key, a search program is going to come up!!!
Personally, I am pro caps lock. I've worked for several different companies, and the need is there for it. Sure I may not use it at personally that much, but there are needs for it. Maybe a different place on the keyboard, but still needed. How about the insert key. When is the last time you used that key?! Only reason that isn't complained about it because of placement on the keyboard.
If you gave 100 people a choice on their ideal key layout, you would basically get 100 different answers.

I'll give you the caps lock key, and take the tilde while you're at it! I never use it OR the other offset apostrophe thing.

Only Google could re-invent the keyboard.
Being an engineer, my people and I use the caps lock all the time, because that's just what we do. :P

Hey genius,
You're an engineer, so you should have been able to figure this one out yourself, but this is a netbook. Not exactly the kind of thing that you would be using to do your engineering stuff on. This is for average Joe Hammocker, and he doesn't need the Caps Lock as much as you and your rocket science buddies do.
LOL!
In all seriousness though, please get rid of the Insert, Scroll lock and Pause key too Google!

In the industry I work in we need caps lock for commenting and notes. Maybe archaeic to a point but sometimes when switching from our billing system to email you forget to switch the lock off which prompts some responders to ask why you're mad etc.
No shattering of the Earth news either way.

That's fantastic! What a great idea... I can't remember the last time I used CAPS LOCK anyway. Considering there aren't many keys you can do this with on a standard keyboard -- genius!
