Controversial Metro interface? Why is it when Microsoft tries something different there's an outcry coming from all over the tech world, but when Apple does the same it quickly gets labeled as "innovation"?

avatar

Apple isn't getting too many free passes in this area. I can think of many examples. Here's just one: if you search Apple's support forums you'll see just as much backlash for their "innovations" in OS X Lion.

...but anyway: I think Metro is OK too FWIW. You know what's funny is all the people who are crying and saying "I'm switching to Linux!" as if they can't just continue to use Win7. (I can think of some good reasons to switch to Linux, but that's not one of them.) Then there's the Linux people who crapped themselves over Ubuntu's Unity UI as if they couldn't just install GNOME, KDE, or many others.

Nothing new under the sun ;)

...what's different from this.

Self-healing NTFS has been around since Vista (and it works on Win7). My bet is this is more robust but I have no idea.

"When the scan is done, Windows 8 will prompt the user to reboot the PC at his convenience." will this prompt be the same prompt to reboot pc at our convenience like the windows update restart at our convenience pop up that comes up every 5 mins after we install updates n choose not to reboot right away

avatar

JTF195

Those prompts are already gone in Windows 8. The prompt you get will be on the lock screen, same as the new "Your computer will be restarted in 2 days" prompt you get when updates have been installed.

This is nice n all but why can't they just put thsi in a service pack for win7?????? all the improvements I see in win8 are tiny and can easily be backported to win7

Why doesn't Activision release free upgrades to Call Of Duty every year instead of releasing a whole new game? Why doesn't Apple release new versions of OS X as free upgrades instead of charging for them? Why doesn't Adobe release free upgrades to Creative Studio instead of charging for new versions every year?

Because they are a business. They have employee's and shareholders to pay. You think Microsoft makes Windows just for the heck of it?

The idea is not to fix Windows 7, but to sell you a new O.S. every couple of years!

To understand Microsoft's business model, look up the word "Extortion"

Why couldn't Microsoft add DX10 or 11 to XP ?
or allow users to use the newest media player and web browser in XP ?

Same idea!

There are millions of XP licenses going unused, not because there was anything wrong with XP, but because Microsoft wants you on the perpetual upgrade cycle to continuously take your money year after year

You sound a bit new to this scam so I'll go easy on you but if you have been using Microsoft since DOS 3 like I have, you would have seen this coming

Just Google "Microsoft Sued" to get a current overview of who and what they have already destroyed or are currently destroying, not due to infringement, but because it affects Microsoft's bottom line

see also JAVA
see also Linux
etc etc etc

Microsoft is a Parasite!

avatar

BadCommand

Would be better if you Bing'd "Microsoft Sued". After all with the latest update the Bing search bar is conveniently located right there in the middle of your desktop! No more searching around for those pesky competitors.

while the moose's post might be more than a bit vitriolic, in this case at least, it's not untrue.

OK, I'm not sure what to do now... even better behind-the-scenes improvements, but still that terrible UI to screw things up...

What LatiosXT said... they have a fundamentally fantastic operating system for the next generation...

Then they let Sybil write the Interface after clubbing her in the head.

On one hand, Microsoft seems to be making great strides improving the performance to Windows and tweaking a few things here and there to give less hiccups.

On the other hand, that damned GUI.
