China Looking to AMD and VIA for Netbooks Larger than 12 Inches

Some manufacturers are trying their best to blur the line that separates netbooks from notebooks. According to a Commercial Times report, white-box netbook manufacturers in China have also turned their attention to producing netbooks with large displays. They are said to be manufacturing netbooks, with screen sizes in excess of 12 inches, based on AMD and VIA processors. According to the report, they are deliberately avoiding using Intel processors as the chip maker has placed restrictions on the screen size of Atom-toting netbooks. Besides, they are helped in making their choice by the fact that VIA processors are much cheaper than their Intel counterparts.

Netbooks larger than 12". Isn't that called a notebook? Really, once you take away the portability of a netbook, what's the point? Pay less for a crippled notebook that's just as clunky. Seem a bit kludgy.

Via needs to jump into the netbook scene fast because it's a newer market that amd has no share in. If via gets in before amd can get rolling I would be very happy because I have a netbook powered by a via processor and although it runs hot due to its 90nm process it does not sacrifice speed. It powered through vista like a champ and when I decided to test Windows Seven out it runs even faster.

Now if the japanese would jump on the AMD/VIA processors it might tell Microsoft/Intel stop telling us what we can do or canot do. Lets see we cant sell enough 15" and up laptops so lets limet the size of nettop/netbooks to 10". What difference does it make if its 8" 10" 12" 15" 17" if i want a 17" nettop/netbook beacuse of my bad eye sight i should beable to have one.

Economics: let's say you have a 17" 'netbook' at $650 and a 17" 'laptop' at $1300. The populace will majoritarily buy the netbook because of the price. In a certain extent that's OK because a netbook is sufficient for browsing, emailing, facebooking and so on. In other words, the 17" netbook cannibalizes the 17" laptop market. CPU and laptop manufacturers are making less money. From their point of view it is much better to have people buying a 17" laptop AND a 10" netbook.
