Check Out Google's New Chrome Logo
Google ran over its Chrome logo with a steam roller, straightened the lines, and then applied a healthy dose of polish remover. The result is what you see here, which is a flat, 2D image that looks like it could have preceded the one it's designed to replace. The cosmetic change follows a similar revamping of Chromium's all-blue makeover. Why the change?
We're not entirely sure, and so far the communicative browser maker and search giant isn't saying why. Maybe it was simply time for a new look, or perhaps Google wants its logo to mimic Chrome's minimalistic approach to the browser interface. In an ironic twist, the new 2D logo is only showing up in Google's Developer channel with Chrome 11, the next major version of Chrome and the first to come with hardware acceleration enabled by default to better process all those groovy Web graphics.
What do you think of the new logo? Do you love it, hate it, or are you indifferent?

I don't think it really needed modification. The rounded sphere-like logos of Firefox, Chrome and IE seem to allude to the globe. Flattening it to a circle makes the shape less meaningful.
If they're looking for simplification I'd almost prefer an even flatter presentation. Get rid of the subtle gradient and the diagonal shading that's implying, what, a drop shadow? As a 2D representation of a 3D object it's confusing.

It appears to me to imply a trim-the-fat, lean-&-fast, optimized-for-speed browser. To me, much better than the sluggish browsers that do a million things most of us never need/want when just looking for info. Leave the bloat-browsers for the facebook-game-using masses.

It's tasteful. I'm not sure why people are so fond of shiny things. Does it really matter if an icon is "boring"? I don't want a mess of clashing, overdone icons on my desktop.

Oh hay, the worlds largest spy network with an All Seeing Eye in its logo. What do you know. . .

HATE it....it's so bland and boring compared to the old one. Like someuid said, it could only go up in awesomeness if the internal gears were shown in a simplistic but crazy manner.

It looks like it would be the logo of Channel 9 Action News in the '70s or '80s.

It sucks! But then the 'do no harm' google seems to have sold out its roots so it too sucks.

I want a transparent logo that shows the inner workings of my monitor's circuitry. Until then, I am not impressed with this tomfoolery of logos and such.
Meanwhile, I will continue to use Chrome at home.

i kind of like the minimalistic approach that people are taking designing logos lately. for a while, the web 2.0 glossy/reflective/diagonal-stripe/rounded design was getting out of hand. maybe this is web 3.0

I think that whoever designed this in Marketing had definitely passed the "two drink minimum" that is mentioned in Dilbert as a requirement for working in the department.

Almost exactly as Winston Rowntree predicted in the <a href="http://www.cracked.com/article_19045_awful-logo-design-art-form-5Bcomic5D.html">cracked.com</a> comic on Logo design:
"Changing trends. 1) Detailed, Old Timey Logo 2) Hit-On-The-Head Simplified version 3) Hideous, Unnecessary Postmodern Update"

One of the worst looking logos I've seen in a long time. I don't like the new IE icon either.
That said, IE 9 freaking rocks and that's what I'll be using.

I'm tempted to start designing my own browser, exclusively with the purpose of using any icon shape other than a circle. chrome, opera, safari, IE, firefox, on and on and on.... round.
why not a triangle?
