Carl Zeiss Commits to Micro Four Thirds System
Renowned lens maker Carl Zeiss has pledged support for the increasingly popular Micro Four Thirds System standard. It's a big win for the standard, which despite its growing popularity was still largely represented by just two major players: Olympus and Panasonic. Not anymore.
"For more than 160 years, the lenses of Carl Zeiss AG have been defining the state-of-the-art in optical technology," Carl Zeiss AG said. "Now, as Carl Zeiss AG joins the Micro Four Thirds Systems group, ZEISS HD Video lenses will be available to users of Micro Four Thirds cameras, contributing to a vastly expanded product line and enhancing the joys of digital imaging with the Micro Four Thirds System."
Not to be confused with the regular Four Thirds System, the Micro Four Thirds format offers roughly 50 percent shorter flangeback distance (mount-to-sensor), a lens mount outer diameter that's about 6mm smaller, and more electrical contacts in mounts (increased from 9 to 11).
