Microsoft came under fire from OEMs that couldn't sell Vista PCs with
upgrade offers – new installations would have to be made – but this
should no longer be the case.marirea sanilor

The EU trying to say this is required in Windows worldwide is greatly overstepping their bounds.

Opera needs to stop whining like babies over Internet Explorer. Mozilla Firefox didn't have trouble taking their stake of marketshare from IE. Opera can't blame its own browser unpopularity on Microsoft when Chrome and Firefox can stake claims without such whining. The EU is very anti-Microsoft slanted.

Yes, the ballot screen is what should be.

Yes, opera is just hurting they're reputation by asking for more.

Oh, what sweet retribution it would be if MS rolled out its browser ballot and Opera was not on it. It doesn't matter if you hate MS, or if you think they are a monopoly abusing their power by packaging their browser. No time in history has a company been forced to provide its competitors product free of charge. No argument you can possibly make could justify that command. If I am selling a product and giving something else away for free, I can accept it if the government says "Hey, we can't let you give that away with your other product." But if the government says "Hey, you need to give away all of your competitions products as well." Thats just ludicrous. It is the exact oposite of capitolism. Personally, I think MS should charge any company that wants to be part of their browser ballot. Afterall, this amounts to nothing more than the absolute best free advertisement you can get. If MS has to advertise everyone elses product, they should be compensated accordingly.

wow, opera needs to go die, and did anyone ever notice a common effect in life, like how ONLY ugly girls complain and bitch about hot girls in skimpy clothing?.............or how the shittiest browser wants to complain about how they are being left out, maybe cause they SUCK.

I'm no fan of IE, but I think MS should stop folding to the EU and their threats. If they really want to shut them [the EU] up they should ship Windows 7 with no browser installed and just have a little notice in the OS saying "As per orders of the EU this OS contains no preinstalled browser". Some people may get pissed off at MS, but a greater number will be pissed off at the EU and the people they elected in there.

Or, they [Microsoft] could just tell the EU they're going to sell their product intact with a browser whether they like it or not. Then the moment the EU starts making threats, MS should announce that they're pulling their product from the shelves in all EU countries. The EU will change its tune real quick.

Governments only have power because the people say they have power. The moment people stop recognizing that power, governments are just bullies trying to control the masses and the Pope is just a guy in a stupid hat.

Here is the answer for all those people wanting to know what is wrong with opera. As quoted from the article " The exact lineup of browsers hasn’t been finalized yet, but it is said to include 10 of “the most widely-used web browsers that run on Windows with a usage share of equal to or more than 0.5% in the European Economic Area”. Oddly enough, it’s still not even clear if Opera meets these requirements" the people have spoken and they say that Opera is a P.O.S. It's not that nobody knows about opera, hell they're on Wii, Blackberry, ect. It's just that nobody wants to use it.

Who came first Netscape or IE. IE could not compete so Microsoft used there dominating operating system to crush netscape.

The whole thing is pretty ridiculous. Microsoft develops a product, and then gets told what they can and can't do with it. I've got nothing against Opera, and although I haven't used it, I'd certainly give it a shot if I ever decided to ditch Chrome. Still, this little stunt they're pulling is bullshit. Now they don't want icons? Hell, why don't we get rid of the "Tell me more" links while we're at it. They know they'll have a better shot at nabbing some market share if people know absolutely nothing about the product they're delivering, and so they're trying to get Microsoft to cater to their unfair, bizarre whims by making it a big, unnecessary legal mess. I call bullshit, Opera. If your product can't hold its own, then you need to come up with a better product.

avatar

Shckr57

wow, i cant agree any more with that. I could see microsoft pulling off a stunt, where they own the download servers so other browsers would have to pay them if they wanted there browser there in the first place, hey, it's advertising isn't it.

avatar

valtonray

these anti trust suites against ms are a load of crap when you consider what apple gets away with.

avatar

MeTo

Will you guys ever get it through your head. Apple owns only 10% (give or take) of the market they are NOT a big enough fish to fry. There is not ENOUGH money to be made.

avatar

rsturgill001

And dont forget if MS had not incorperated there web browser odds are you would have to buy one. netscape wase not free unless you were useing the beta version, Untill MS added theres to windows

avatar

MeTo

Microsoft Could have gave you IE for free as a addon stand alone program and there would not be a monopoly problem. This all started with Win 95 win they intergrated IE to win95.

avatar

mean_jellybean

All of this is BS...it's not like you didn't have a choice all along. NOTHING PREVENTED you from using another browser.

avatar

MeTo

Microsoft prevents you from uninstalling IE. Try going into control panel>programs>uninstall a program and uninstall Internet explorer you can't. You have no choice Microsoft installed Internet explorer for you. Thats how they gained the most installed internet browser market.

avatar

mean_jellybean

OK, you can't uninstall it (yes I knew that, I am a MaxPC reader), so what. How does that stop anyone from loading up something different. Their most installed browser status came more from the lazy puplic anyway.

avatar

thecliogeek

What Microsoft did was use the Windows Explorer as a foundation and added bells and whistles to it. That is why they can't un-install it! Try un-installing Safari on an Apple product. I'm not a MS Fan-boy but if I make a product and you don't like it, I'm going to tell you to not buy it. There are plenty of Linux based products out there that can be used for free that DON'T have IE7, or 8 on it. Use them I would say, and there are enough products out there to be able to open MS products too to install on that Linux. You had to learn to use an MS product, quit your bitching and learn one of them. Or better yet, buy an Apple product and buy twice to 3 times what an IBM clone costs. If you don't like it..DON'T BUY IT, I believe that goes without saying.

Again stop trolling. What's so bad about Opera? I want some answers.

avatar

Skillz_n_Magic

Microsoft shouldn't have to force feed Opera to everone just because it's a piece of shit that no one wants to use.

avatar

MeTo

It's not forceing Opera it's just giving you a choice. I have used Opera my preferance is Firefox. The Operating system should not dictate what internet browser you use. Microsoft "WAS" a opearting system first they added IE after the fact to kill netscape and U.S.A. let them get away with it. Microsoft should have gotten the same treatment in America as they did in EU.

avatar

guoruiwu1994

You guys post news extremely late. Yesterday Microsoft announced that they would be canceling the E edition of Windows 7, and that Europe will be getting the same edition as everywhere else.

avatar

Justin.Kerr

That dosn't contradict anything in the news post.

Yes the E edition is canceled, but all MS os's in Europe will get the browser ballot screen.

That was the point of the article.

avatar

MeTo

Microsoft did the right thing. The next best thing would be to let anybody in the world that wants to uninstall IE beable to do it. I don't want to just "HIDE IT" i want the ability to uninstall it. It drags the OS down.

avatar

aziobron

as far as i'm concerned, windows should come with one browser preinstalled - microsoft's own internet explorer. i dont need a bunch of different preloaded software n browswers im not gonna use taking up hdd space n system resources. if i wanna use something other that IE, ill download it myself.

avatar

robotsneedhugs2

They're not pre-loaded, it gives you a link to download them. "The browser ballot screen will include two links, one to the manufacturers website where they can learn more and an extra link directly to a download server."

avatar

dag1992

Ultimately the whole purpose seems to be to show people that there's choice out there when it comes to browsers. Whether they choose IE or any of the other browsers is purely their preference. Remember, even today not everyone knows that that choice exists, but at the same time they'll continue to choose IE because of the little blue icon they're used to seeing.

Opera did all this to get people to use thier worthless browser. Everyone is using IE, Firefox or Chrome. Me, I'm currently using Sleipnir, that I saw on MaxPC a while back. Haven't been using IE of Firefox since. This is not going stop people from using IE. Most people I know have downloaded Firefox or Chrome and had went back to using IE cause it simple to use. All you do is set one security setting and thats it. While I give that the other two is more secure. It's all about how easy it is to use, there still alot people who think Java is coffee.

avatar

dag1992

Worthless? No need to troll my friend. I find it to be quite good, thank you very much.

no one fucking cares about you defending a shitty browser, so, gtfo or tits
