Brooklyn Teen Wins $50,000 Texting Championship
We're not sure what's more disheartening, the fact that Brianna Hendrickson, a 13-year-old from Brooklyn, New York text messages her friends and family 7,000 times a month, or that doing so prepared her to win this year's LG U.S. National Texting Championship and bring home $50,000 for her efforts.
Either way, little Miss Hendrickson has a good jump on her college tuition after beating out 500,000 other texters who participated in the challenge. During the final battle, Hendrickson triumphed over two other teens and a 48-year-old woman from Chicago by being the first to accurately type, "Old McDonald had a farm, Ei, ei, oh! And on this farm he had a champ. W/a txtr here, and BFF there. Here a text, there a text, erywhere a text-text!"
"I was really nervous when I saw the final phrase and worried my fingers wouldn't be fast enough," Hendrickson said. "Hearing my name announced was amazing and shocking all at the same time."
Hendrickson is now eligible to compete in the LG Text for Good Challenge, in which she could double her cash price, plus another $50,000 for a charity of her choosing.

I bet it ain't faster than Swype!
But no, it's probably slower. And on what phone are they texting?
She probably uses the phone that she had to speed text on, giving her an edge over the competition...

And if you watch the video you'll see she can both chew gum and text fast at the same time. Now THAT'S talent.

Doing some quick calculations. Assuming that she's up 16 hours a day, if she's texting 7,000 texts a month, she's sending out, on average, a text every 4 minutes. But texting is a 2-way thing - I'm assuming she's waiting to send out a text only after she's received a text or something like that. So that means, she's actively participating in 14,000 texts a month (reading and sending)! So that means, texting is involving 1 out of every 2 minutes of her LIFE!!!!

7000 texts a month! She could use that prize-money for: 1) get psychiatric help, or 2) pay her text overage use that she must've incurred at some point in time.

Well good for her. I bet her parents are proud, her having such a marketable skill that will clearly benefit her as an adult.
Sigh...

Can she do it while driving and not crash.
Being the texting champion is nothing to be proud of.
Watch, she will be on the next "Eat Incredible, be Incredible" egg commercial. Eggs build faster thumbs.

Texting is not the world, school is what these teens need to worry about. If you finish school, you can get a job and have a life. If you just text all the time, you have no life and no interaction with real world people in front of you, not on a screen. Shut down these stupid contests and donate the money which they seem to have plenty of if they want to give it away to people who need it.

Honestly, there's not a whole lot to be gained just because you can text faster than lightning. What this contest seems to say to me is that it's ok to be obsessed with texting.

The last thing we should be doing is not only encouraging teens to text but rewarding them financially for it. They should at least deduct $10 for every spelling and grammatical error.

i think a contest to see which teenage girl can go the longest without texting is the real challenge.

That is the best comment I've ever seen on this website. You hit the nail on the head as well as made me ROFLMAO.
I'd pay $100,000,000 to see a girl go without texting for an entire month.
