Box Offers 50GB Of Free Cloud Storage To Android Users
While PC geeks may be eagerly awaiting the launch of Ivy Bridge and Kepler GPUs, less hardcore tech fans have been throwing dollars at two particular niches: mobile and the cloud. Box, a cloud storage company competing for your nebulous attention, has just announced a killer new offer that brings those two elements together. The service released an update for its Android app today, and anyone who snags the app in the next 30 days gets a whopping 50GB of free cloud storage space, good for the rest of your life.
That's a lot of ones and zeros; by comparison, Microsoft's SkyDrive often draws praise for its spacious 25GB gratis offering, and Box's limited time incentive doubles that up. As if that wasn't sweet enough, Box will increase your free file size limit to 100MB (up from 25MB) if you download the Android app before March 23 at 11:59 PST. There are no strings attached, either; just download the app and sign in or create a new account to get the free storage, which is accessible from any device -- not just your Android phone.
If this is up your alley -- and hey, who doesn't like free stuff? -- saunter over to the Android Market to download the Box app.

Just got my 50GB account on my LG Optimus 2x. Yes the 100mb condition is not great but I'll take it. Very fast registration, thanks Brad.

Box doesn't offer encryption. I use SpiderOak. This cloud storage lets me easily backup, sync, share, remotely access and store all my data. I can add as many different computers and drives to a single account so all my data can live in a central location. My local data and the data transfer are encrypted. If you want security, go with SpiderOak. The application has been working for me very nicely. You can sign up if you use the download link below and we will both receive an additional free 1GB of storage. And you can also feel free to refer as many friends as you like. I signed up about a month ago and gained 28GB through referrals. The maximum to gain is 50GB.

P.S. If you use the WORLDBACKUPDAY promo code you can gain 6 GB in total when you sign up.

Anyone ever stop to wonder why all these upstarts are offering to freely store our data in the cloud? Nothing is ever truly free. They have business expenses to run these servers. They want our data, and don't happen to mention what is likely the real reason why. But go ahead. It's safe. If you don't believe them, just ask them. :-)
It's not like anyone hacks into the cloud these days, right?

Got it. A bit goofy having to log in to the website to upload files from the desktop, but it works. I can still use my 7GB of Dropbox for synching files I update more often and use the Box's 50GB for more of a storage.
After all 50 GB cloud for free is nothing to scoff at.Thanks for the info MaximumPC!

You guys know that this requires you to grant it permission to access your contacts, right? They say it's to make some sharing feature easier to use, but I'm suspicious. How do I know what they're doing with my contacts' information? And why can't they only ask for permission if I actually want that feature? Next...

That 100MB upload limit is still pretty annoying, as it takes out tv shows and movies.

FYI--doesn't look like they offer the desktop sync feature that Dropbox currently does and Skydrive will be in Win8. Don't know about anyone else, but that's a deal-breaker for me.

It may not have syncing, but it is still 50GB of online storage for free. It never hurts to have a little more free extra storage space.

A syncing feature is included as part of Box's premium business offerings, which start at about $15 a head. I'm not sure if you can sign up for it as a single personal user.

Yeah, I saw that. Guess I've become spoiled, since I'm unwilling to pay 15/month for that (if you even can). Guess I'll just keep spamming family and friends until they join dropbox, and up my storage the hard way...

Hi, I recently added this app to my kindle fire and my galaxy s 2, but I'm unable to add it to my desktop (win7). Was wondering if it was compatible as it offers more storage than my current Dropbox app.
When I go to the android store, it says to sign in (which I do) and it says only to send to my Galaxy S2 (where it is already installed). Is there a workaround to have it work on my desktop?

Nevermind, I was trying to download the app to desktop, didn't realize I just needed to go to box.com to access the storage via computer.
