Blu-ray Could Save the Consumer Electronics Market
Posted 07/20/09 at 02:00:54 PM by Paul Lilly
The PC market isn't the only sector to note its first decline since the dot-com bust. According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), consumer electronics in general is on pace to record its first annual drop in revenue since 2001, the same year the PC market also recorded its last decline prior to 2009.
Revenues are expected to be about $165 billion by the end of the year, down about 7.7 percent from 2008. However, it's not because consumers have reduced their spending. Instead, the CEA blames the lower revenue on lower product prices. In fact, CE spending as a percentage of all durable goods is as high as it has been in 50 years, TGDaily reports.
That might come as little consolation to CE manufacturers unable to cash in on consumer spending, but Blu-ray could turn that around. Despite falling prices of Blu-ray players, the CEA predicts unit shipments to reach nearly six million, a whopping 112 percent jump. That would push Blu-ray revenue over the $1 billion mark, a 48 percent increase over 2008.

I grabbed one of those $100 BD players from Walmart. Although so far it's been a decent unit one missing feature is driving me nuts. The damn thing cannot remember the stopping point half the time when I shut it down. I'm probably going to take it back and just pick up a better player down the road.

It's awesome but I still am not stunned half the time I watch movies. It's sad because all these different movies have different encoding quality, and so far 3 of my 4 movies have a f-load of noise in them....I don't understand why. It was still a worthy investment. I waited for a long time and finally said to myself to stop waiting and just do it.
PS3 Blu-Ray FTW!

I Play my movies on my PS3 on my 42" 1080P Plasma HDTV... I waited until the format war was over to buy movies though, and was glad when Blu-Ray won(because of the PS3). Now I own 25 titles on Blu-Ray and plan to buy many more, the picture quality is amazing compared to DVD resolution of 480I/P. I have also found that many movies can be had on Blu-Ray for as little as $10, and that's up here in Canada, just have to watch the sales and buy the release date(cheaper on release date) or wait a month or so before buying. That said, by no way am I replacing my entire DVD collection with Blu-Rays, there is just too many and can be upscaled on the PS3 or my Media Center PC, I'm only upgrading my Favorites, Action hits, and future purchases... DVD won't be dead for many years yet... Especially considering there are still many people still without an HDTV, so HD movies are useless to them...
I still haven't bought a

I saw a Blu-Ray player at Wal-Mart for $100 a couple days ago. If it keeps this up, it will be almost as cheap as DVD.
