BlackBerry Outage Continues, May Be Spreading
RIM can’t seem to get back on its feet. Amidst falling sales, and shareholder discontent, the smartphone make is now dealing with a three-day long service outage that seems to be spreading, rather than abating. The outage started in the Middle East as well as parts of Europe and Asia, but now reports indicate that it may also be affecting some US and Canadian users.
Unlike other smartphone platforms, RIM manages the flow of data and service for all its devices through its own back end. This allows lowers speed connections to still result in acceptable levels of performance, but when the servers go offline, RIM is stuck with a lot of unhappy customers.
RIM has said that the outage was caused by a “core switch error”, and it has been fixed. However, while the issue was being resolved, the servers were hit with a massive backlog of data, which now must be worked through before service can be restored. Do you have a BlackBerry that’s been having issues? Let us know.

As of 4pm Central Time we are back up and runnig as well. Sucks bad that this happened AGAIN. We are currently looking for alternatives to Blackberry, but one of the major criteria is automatic sync with Exchange as seamlessly as Blackberrys do. Droid based phones can be wonky with that, and is a deal killer.

We are up and running again as of about 3:30 PM CA time.
For sure going to look at the Verizon Droid choices at CES and then decide.

How 'half-eaten fruit'-minded to want to proxy all the data between devices on an entire platform through back-end systems. We of the Android community would welcome you with open (source) arms. ;)

Here in So Cal I have not had any BBy issues yesterday or today. I am concerned however that RIM is losing it. My BBy does all I want but I am afraid RIM may not keep up and that their reliability is in decline.
We will be looking at the next gen phones for our company in Janurary, right after CES and we are going to consider Droids this time. No decision yet however.
UPDATE: I spoke too soon. I have not had e mails delivered to my BBy in hours. I was at my desk so I did not notice. I can not access web pages. I just called a client who has his BBy on a different carrier and he is also down. Except for phone everything else seems to be down. Bummer.

Yes I can confirm that Canadians are being affected. I have a BlackBerry Torch and it has been down since last night, our entire company has not had the use of BBM, Email, Internet, etc. Anything to do with BlackBerries push services are DOWN!
