the "industry" will never allow it, they'll go as far as to pay millions to companies to NOT do business with Bit Torrent simply because it's in their best interest to make sure bit torrent remains the villain.

and that's only in the "legal" venue of crushing BT's chances of cleaning up. there's no shortage of ways they can hack, blackmail, and otherwise harrass anyone stupid enough to get into bed with Bit Torrent and go against the wishes of the Great and Powerful RIAA/MPAA

How could they go "legit" without charging people to use the client? I would imagine even considering making a torrent app "legit" would involve cash! Wouldnt that mean someone has to pay...and that would be its users wouldnt it? Doesnt seem like something torrent users would be up for....

There are plenty of ways to monetize bit torrent. They can license the technology, as listed in the article. They can also put advertising in the lient the way phone app makers do, or they can also do sponsered search results, or, the way Pirate Bay does, platform pages encouraging you towards specific services. Or yes, they could charge for the client.

Weren't they trying to do this, like, 7 years ago? I'm not sure what's changed this time.

ROFL. What are torrents really used for? Nothing legal. Same with newsgroups and DDL. Which will never change unless a better way of pirating arrives.

More and more, I'm seeing game developers (especially F2P MMO's) utilizing torrents.

Even if they do manage to go "legit" most ISP's shape traffic around bit torrent to slow it down to a crawl. An uphill battle indeed.
