Bing Takes, then Loses #2 Search Engine Spot
Posted 06/08/09 at 02:55:17 PM by Paul Lilly
As expected, Bing, Microsoft's search decision engine, shot up the charts following its public debut and quickly became the No. 2 search engine behind Google. But before Microsoft could pop the champagne on what looked to be a stellar start, Bing bounced out of second place just one day later, conceding the No. 2 spot back to Yahoo.
More specifically, Bing claimed 15 percent of the U.S. search market on June 4th compared to Yahoo's 10 percent. But on June 5th, Microsoft's decision engine fell to 10 percent while Yahoo rose to just shy of 11 percent, enough to put it back in second place. As of yesterday, Bing had fallen to 6.68 percent while Yahoo rose to 11.33 percent, nearly a 5 percent difference between the two.
Bing continues to fall, checking in at 5.65 percent so far today. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft can reverse the downward trend now that the initial excitement has worn off, and justify spending between $80-$100 million advertising its decision engine.
Non-Competitor / Mom's 3rd rule of life

I see this not really as a google competitor, but a companion. The way it's been touted, I would use google for everyday, and try this if I were doing research for a project or something. That's an area where Google searches often leave me wanting.
Until that comes along, I doubt I'll even give it a second thought, let alone a try.
But then again, I'd probably go to Wolfram Alpha first. One because I heard of it first, and two because it's a much cooler (albiet longer) name.
"Bing" is another attempt by Microsoft to prove it's corporate geeks can be as cool and hip as the trendy crowd. They just make themselves look silly. Tip: Don't be trendy, be what you are. You're good at it, so stop all this nonsense of trying to be someone else

Wouldn't it be so ironic if after all this rebranding it turned out that Bing ended up with less market share than it had as Live search? Heh. We'll see.
Did you actually try it?

It kills me how people bash bing just because it isn't google.
Bing "Maximum Pc"
Google "Maximum Pc"

I guess that $80-$100 million advertising budget didn't reach me. The only place I've heard of Bing is from this site!
Good advertisement.

Brilliant advertising. I feel they jumped the gun. Bing isn't as developed as google. I feel with time and the bank Microsoft can put behind it, Bing will be the new google or even better. Google took almost a decade to get where it is, Bing just came into play. Give it time.
Have not used it

Have not used Bing and likely wont. If it returns results like IE...or any other search engine besides Google it wont get anywhere besides where it is....just another engine that doesn't produce accurate results and is not even a tenth as good or accurate as a google search...just like the rest.
I am not a Microsoft fan boy

How can you make that claim if you havent even tried it. I tried it and i don't like it. At least i tried it so i am speaking from experience not just hate.

It's going to take more than a few days to know how well Bing will do, probably be more like months. You can't know how well something like a search engine is going to do over a week, it takes more time so give it chance before you judge the merits/demerits of Bing. "Google" is a verb for serching the net, it's going to take a whole heck of a lot of time to change that. Will I switch to Bing...no Google is all I need.
Give up Microsoft!

The Microsoft train is closer to ending. They cannot even blame the economy. Just like two of the big three automakers are on the way out so Microsoft thanks to their intuitive way to screw the American people. If they want to remain competitive Microsoft needs to soften their prices. Not to mention their unyielding attempts to win over the youth market with their very unimpressive names like BING. What were they thinking. I own three computers and a laptop and only have two of them running Windows. The other two; Ubuntu. Free Linux is the way to go unless you are a serious gamer.
Just no...

How are they screwing the American people exactly? If there is any computer company screwing anybody it's Apple. You can get a laptop with the same specs running Vista a lot cheaper than an Apple laptop. And Bing isn't exactly trying to attract "youth". It's ads were targeting people who used search engines and got back what they didn't want. Everytime I use google, I get at least 5 results that are ads and are no good for sources or don't help me at all.
LET ME CLARIFY FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND: Google works, and I get the results I want 95% of the time. It's just half the results are advertisements that DON'T HELP. Bing is BEING DESIGNED (that means it's not done yet) to give with searchers MORE RESULTS and MORE OPTIONS THAT ARE CLOSER to their search.
I know there are people here who used google at one point and didn't get what they were searching for. It happens to me at least once a week.
Anyways, back to the main point. The only thing Microsoft is failing at right now is their OS. Vista is not as good as XP was AT RELEASE but it's a good OS now. Not great, just good. Microsoft has some of the best Developer tools around.
I'm in the middle of class while writing this and lost my train of thought. All I know is your statement was an ignorant one. You don't know where MS is going with Bing, and you can't judge whether they are a fail company or not. You said so yourself, you use linux for the most part unless gaming. FYI, Ubuntu is the linux for noobs. Fedora is the way to go for productivity.
that is very interesting.

that is very interesting. I found my mom using bing the other day. Only used it because it was her default search engine in her, of course IE browser. Her search brought back 0% relevance on what she was trying to find, there was completely nothing. Her search was for a newspaper company. I told her use google and she got was she was looking for on the 1st result. Then i told her just use google dont mess with this bing :D.
It takes time.

You can't build a search engine overnight. Microsoft jump the gun here spending all of this money on a search engine that's not ready to take on the big wigs. But don't say Bing is a bad search engine because your mother couldn't find a newspaper company. Chances are it's just not in the Bing database yet. Google was worse off when it first started, and it took almost a decade for it to get to where it is now. Bing has a better start by a company with all this money to only improve it. It will take years before Bing can be as good as google if not better. Only time will tell.
