Bing Climbs Past 10% Market Share

Microsoft still has a long ways to go before it catches up with Google in the search market, but the company's Bing search service shows tremendous promise as the fastest-growing U.S. search engine among the top 10, according to data from Nielsen.

In the month of August, Bing scoured the web 1.1 billion times, a jump of 22.1 percent over July. That was enough to give the search service a 10.7 percent share of the search engine market, edging ever closer to Yahoo, which dropped down 4.2 percent and now holds a 16 percent stake.

For the time being, Google enjoys a comfortable lead with a 64.6 percent share and 7 billion searches in August, but it has to be concerned with Bing's rapid upward climb. Moreover, a recent study indicates that users prefer the design and feature-set of Bing over Google, which should give the No. 1 search company cause for concern.

avatarBing? No Thanks.

Tried Bing for three days. Never like the results it come out with my customers searching for their task. Not a good one bit. That's why they're going for Yahoo! to get the back bone of searching. Google user here all the way.

avatarOnly three years ago no one

Only three years ago no one could have imagined that Google and Microsoft would be competing head-to-head on so many fronts.

Android vs. Windows Mobile, Bing vs. Google, Chrome vs. IE, Chrome OS vs. Windows.

Linux and Apple will stay on the fringes; the corporate battle of the next decade will be between Google and Microsoft.

Chrome OS is a form of linux, I believe, so would necessarily have a smaller market share than linux as a whole, and apple's iPhone OS is really popular.  With iPhones, which are popular.

avatarI am one of those that went to Bing

I tried Bing about six weeks ago and I found myself using it more and more. I made it my default in August and now the rest of our computers are using Bing. It is not perfict but I do like it better.

One reason I am a little down on Google overall is all those google tool bars that keep showing up on my clients computers without invitation.

avatarHokay

I like a lot of things about Bing (like integrated Wikipedia articles in reference results, etc.), but the main thing that has me sticking with Google for now is iGoogle - completely customizable personalized homepage with standard search, weather, Gmail, top news stories, calendar, and so many other things.  Perhaps if Bing offers something like this in the future, I'll make the switch for good.

Down with monopolies!

It's weird to say that in this context though. Thats why I try to use Ubuntu for my OS but Bing for my search engine.
