Bill Gates Loses Richest Person Crown
The filthy rich have a new poster boy. According to the latest Forbes World's Billionaires list, Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim Helu is the richest man alive, with his $53.5 billion fortune proving just about enough to win him the top spot ahead of Bill Gates. Gates may have spent a substantial part of his life atop the list but this year he missed the top spot by a whisker with an estimated worth of $53 billion. He lost nip and tuck despite adding $13 billion to his fortune over the past year. This is the first time in the last 16 years that a non-American has topped the list. Larry Ellison, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Steve Ballmer, Paul Allen and Michael Dell are some of the other tech honchos on the list.

wow, so yeah, Maximumpc fails again at doing a simple google search. Bill Gated hasnt been the richest man in the world since 2008 when he lost the crown to who... Carlos Helu. Carlos only kept the crown for a few months when he lost it to.... Warren Buffett.

but you don't seem to be in love with MPC, if your comments history tells an accurate enough story. Again please feel free to write to the editor about any improvements you wish to see here.

the difference between two consecutive Forbes' lists. And of course a lot of people move up and down the ladder during the period between two annual lists. The fact is Bill Gates was the incumbent no.1, officially. Its like the no.1 football team in the world is not called the defending champion at a world cup unless it happens to be the winer at the previous edition. Another analogy: President and President-elect. So for one to be officially deemed the richest by Forbes there is a certain cut off date.
Cheers

your actually wrong, I do love MPC, its just that Im sad for it. If you look at the front page right now what do you see? Two cellphone stories, something about netflix, xbox 360... nothing having to do with MAXIMUM pcs.You only highlighted my problem with the Bill Gates article... its not news. Its nothing. Its not even ACCURATE non-news. Maximum pc has less less to do with cutting edge pc technology and is beginning to look more and more like an engadget also-ran. The problem is that they dont do it well enough. There chasing an audience they cant have and losing the audience whos been buying their magazine for years.

the problem is your confusing the wbsite with the magazine, the magazine is DEFINITLY Maximum PC, the website, since it can littelry update hourly or more goes beyond the PC so, just by volume alone, it seems like lt's less maximum

No there is more to it than that, talk about an under valued business. Talk about security, there will always be charity.

Maybe not as much as Gates, but he donates through his own Carlos Slim Foundation and others like the Fundación Telmex, Carso Health Institute and more.
Sure, maybe it's for tax purposes or just because he will still make far more than he donates so what the hell, but still, it's something.

No but he's smarter, to have a foundation now that's the gift that keeps giving.

I saw this yesterday on CNN. They were saying that if he had not given so much to charity, he would be worth more like 80 billion $$$. Also, when you are talking about people worth billions, 500 million is not alot. Its about like me making 35,500 an year but my friend only makes 35,000, not much to write home about.

and here is where we get all the Gates haters talking about how he can't afford a gold plated Hundi or something, and he will have to make due with only being slightly rich and narcissistic, despite the man giving /billions/ to charities via the Bill and Malinda Gates foundation.

Bill Gates should still be condidered first, because even at his current worth, he still finds ways to DONATE money. i bet the reason why he got bumped from the #1 spot was because he donated the difference (half-billion?) away teh previous week, unlike the list bumper.

Hey, I've got no problems with Bill. Everyone is free to make as much money as they can and it's nobody's business what they do with it.

It actually does matter what they do with their money. Think of it this way: The US doesn't just print out money. There's a fixed amount of money in the economy - and if some rich dude hoards all the money from the economy (through monopoly - like the game Monopoly where there's only a fixed amount of money), then there won't be money flowing in the economy iif the rich dude doesn't do anything with the money. It wouldn't matter as much if the money is in a bank, as the bank can then use that money to lend it to people. But if the person keeps it in a vault in his mansion, then there'd be no money in the economy for anyone to use. Another way to look at is through a corporation's operations - like Wal-Mart where workers are paid as minimum as possible, and all the profits just trickle into corporate headquarters down in Atlanta. I don't think I'm doing a good job explaining - I learned this in my Money&Banking Finance class during college and it's been a while.

The US doesn't print new money every year, the government doesn't sell bonds and print money to repay them, right..... Have you ever heard of inflation, if the government didn't print money we would all be broke because of it.
On a second note with 53 billion dollars he could buy his own navy, 9 billion a carrier and 3 billion for a destroyer. F22s cost 170 million.
Another funny thought is microsoft is only valued at 28 billion more than bill gates
